Hi,

Just back from dr. and I may have torn my meniscus in my knee. I have to have an mri, and possibly surgery. Has anyone had this done???? What is it like, are you totally knocked out? I am kind of freaking about this.

A close friend of mine had this surgery around 7 years ago.. Don't know if things have changed since then, but yes - she was "knocked out".. The recovery process was a bit on the lengthy side (at home) and I think she was out of work for about 8 weeks.. Of course her job (nurse) required a lot of standing and walking around, so that may have played a part in how long she was out of work..

Good luck - and try not to worry..

I had this done and yes, they used a general anesthesia on me. I had the surgery done on a Friday morning and was back at work on Monday. (Yeah I still had to ice my knee at the office.)

Don't worry... they'll give you good drugs for the first few days... then you won't need them anymore.

Oh! And be sure you go to the PT afterwards.... I didn't and I ended up with a really sore leg. Once I went to my prescribed PT, everything got 100% better.

Had surgery to repair a tear in the right knee two years ago. They didn't do a "general" on me, but the IV sedation did knock me out for the whole thing. I remember butt-hopping onto the gurney, and the next thing I knew I was in recovery, and my knee had a big wrap on it! It was out-patient, I was off crutches on Day 3. No scars. Don't freak out over it. My knee isn't "perfect" (sitting cross legged isn't comfortable with that knee), but the pain of walking being gone and no more sudden "locking-up" is a big plus for me!

Had it done 10 months ago. I was under (a general) and the recovery was GREAT!! Don't freak- your knee will feel much better when it's over!:thumbsup2

A LONG time ago, I had a minor tear in my miniscus. Went to PT to strengthen my leg muscles, which pretty much cured it. After that, I started bike riding consistently, and never had a problem again.

I have had this surgery done on both knees. It was under general anesthesia at the outpatient clinic at the local hospital.

The first day you are numbed up so it's not bad. The second day it was tough just getting to the bathroom but by the third day you feel more improvement.

By the 4th day I was walking again, albeit it still hurt a bit. I took maybe one week before it was back to normal with no pain.

I had no PT, just going back to the surgeon to have the stitches removed. I was lucky enough to stay home for a full week after surgery. Thankfully I have plenty of time stocked up so it was no problem. If nothing else, try to take at least 2 days after the surgery off.

Had my left knee done this past April for this and arthritis.

No I was not knocked out, they just gave me an IV in my hand and then nummed the heck out of my knee. I was able to watch what the doctor was doing as he has a TV.

The knee was numb the rest of the day and almost all the next too. I started therapy the very next day and on day 2 of therapy the therapist told me I had full range of motion back. I only had 10 therapy sessions and then was released.

I had this. First we tried PT, but that did not work. I had the surgery and was not completely knocked out. I watched on a monitor but, I was pretty woozy. Recovery was not too bad.

DH has had this done 5 times so far and needs a 6th surgery. The surgery is easy and recovery is quick. You are up and walking around almost immediately. DH was under general anesthesia all 5 times but it is an outpatient procedure so you should go home the same day. He was back at work in a couple of days with just a knee brace on.

Had both knees done and it was quick and easy. They do it with arthriscopy and I got three small insicions on the knee and they went in an sewed some up and trimmed a little off. Off crutches in three days.

Unfortunately on the second one they found I had degenerative meniscus and my choices were do nothing and wait for a knee replacement 5 years down the road, or take some cells, send it to the lab, grow a ton of replacement cells and then have surgery to reimplant the cells in the knee to regrow the cartilidge. I took option two. That surgery was not at all like the first two. Nine inch scar, they opened the knee up, lifted the knee cap sewed a patch in place, injected the cells, and put it all back together. That hurt! Six weeks with no weight at all on the leg, followed by hydro therapy for six weeks, and know three years later no pain. While at the time I did not think it was worth it, now I see it really was. Knowing I won't need a knee replacement in a couple of years really made it worth it.

thanks everyone, I feel better. I am just antsy to get it done!

My husband had this done two years ago.

His was done at a surgery center. he was really loopy when he came to. He was rxed pain meds. He was on crutches for a week. I remeber because it was done on June 26 of that year and we went to a Forth of July fireworks thing close to the fourth, and he was made, because the spot I had picked out for us to sit at, was up a steep hill....he griped until I pointed out the sidewalk for him to walk up and over to the blanket.

He had to go to PT. On his first day, they made him climb up a set of steps and ride a bike. He said the steps weren;t bad, but the bike was killer. As he went to PT things got easier. His knee is fine now, for the most part, he has a few twinges every now and then, but nothing like the pain he used to have.

The funny thing is, my husband grew up playing baseball, and he still plays softball of the weekends. By college he knew his knees were shot. So later, he finally gets in to see a sports med doctor to complain about his left knee. So the doctor looks at him over a few visits, requests an MRI, and really never sees anything on the x-rays and MRI. He does see a buildup of fluid/placa(?) so he decides to do suregery to remove the placa. It was only when he inserted the scope he saw the tear of my husband's MCL, which again never showed up on anything. The doc thinks it was hidden by fluid. He later told the hubster that it was good thing he decided to go in.

OP, I feel your pain. I mean I really feel your pain. I went to ortho last Wednesday, had 2 MRI on Saturday and go tomorrow to doctor to find what route we are going to go. I wish you luck.

I am having problems with both knees although my right knee is worse. I am wearing braces on both knees most of the time at this point.

Good Luck

Its not too bad. I had it done oe year ago and was back to driving and back to work on day three. I was out under general anesthesia but home the same day. You get three incisions. I didnt do PT becuase it was never prescribed to me to do it but my dr. gave me some exercises to get full range back and I saw him a few times. He said if I wasnt at a certain point he would send me to PT luckily (after a lot of anxiety thinking it would hurt to bend my knee..lol) I am pretty much back to normal and it doesnt hurt when I walk, run or cycle anymore. Its the best decision I ever made!!
