I love the Modern Fashioned at Topolino's. Does anyone have a recipe or would like to create a recipe? The ingredients are listed as: Knob Creek Rye Whiskey, Appleton Estate Reserve Blend Rum, Vanilla Bean, Bitters

Looking at some rum based old fashioned I was the following; A few say its a whiskey forward drink so might be more 1.5 oz whiskey and .5 of Rum. You can also try using a sugar cube with the vanilla bean or vanilla bean extract - but that might make it more woodsy.

1-inch piece of vanilla bean (split) that is muddled with ¼ ounce Simple Syrup
1 oz Knob Creek Rye Whiskey
1 oz Appleton Estate Reserve Blend Rum
1 or 2 dashes orange bitters

This all sounds good! I will try it tomorrow. I was thinking of using vanilla syrup in place of the vanilla bean and simple syrup.

A few of the the "modern" old fashioned 1/4 oz of seltzer. One person suggested using vanilla simple syrup vs. the bean. Personally I'm not using any expensive whiskeys or rums in this type of drink as I do agree with @freshmanjs about the water. If you are using a single block of ice, that's one thing but using ice cubes I wouldn't add water.

I agree with 1.5oz rye and 0.5oz rum to cut the sweetness, but its personal preference.

Since I don't have any rye on hand, I might just use Basil Hayden Bourbon, since I have a bottle. But, I will still make it the Topolino's way in the future.

Lol - the article you posted says that adding water to a high quality whiskey would destroy its flavor. Lol. Omg this is too good.

When did the OP say they were using high quality whiskey?

If you're not, add the water.

Last night, I made a bourbon version of the Modern Fashioned using what I had on hand (not the Riviera ingredients). And it was excellent! So smooth! I think the vanilla syrup was a great substitute. Next, I plan to purchase the original ingredients and try again.

3 pumps vanilla Syrup
1 1/2 oz Basil Hayden Bourbon
1/2 oz Cruzan Aged Rum
2 dashes blood orange bitters
3 maraschino cherries

Poured over several leaf embossed ice cubes and stirred.

Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions!

Well if you’re making crappy drinks, do whatever you want. If you want to make a good old fashioned use high quality whiskey and don’t add water.

OP is using Basil Hayden. Is that high quality in your opinion? Did not add water - only ice.

For Christmas dinner, I've perfected the recipe. My version.

3 pumps vanilla Syrup
1 1/2 oz Templeton Aged Rye Whiskey
1/2 oz Cruzan Aged Rum
2 dashes Angostura bitters
2 dash blood orange bitter
3 dark morello cherries

Stirred and served over ice.

For a crowd, I've sized it up for a bottle of rye (although it was very good with bourbon too)
170 g vanilla Syrup
35 g bitters (combined angostura and/or blood orange bitters)
750 ml bottle Rye Whiskey
8.5 oz or 250 g Aged Rum
bowl of dark morello cherries
