Top Tier Of Cake???

I know it is common for wedding cake designers in new York to give the top tier of the cake (the one you save for your 1st anniversary) to the couple for free. How does this work at dftw? do they still charge you per slice? Is it free? I am hoping someone can ansewr this question for me.

Also I've read the AVERAGE (i know it differs with decoration etc) is $10pp is this about right? Approximately what did you all pay (if you do not mind me asking)? I am looking at having red velvet w/ cream cheese and a simple white fondant w/ some red roses! Thanks guys!

I don't know if the top tier is free or not, so I'm afraid Im not much help. However, I have read in a few places that suggest you don't try to save the top tier for your anniversary because it becomes difficult to bring back with you without getting damaged. But of course if we are determined to bring it back with us, I am sure we could swing it!

I'm curious about the pricing too, because if that's accurate.. ooo boy, 600 dollars for a cake is going to hurt!

With Disney, you don't really pay per layer, you pay per person (50 person minimum). For instance, our cake is going to cost $670 (that's with the 50 person minimum and including the $100 white chocolate castle topper). We're also paying $75 to have the Disney florist scatter flowers at the base of the cake (we saw it in a picture and it was beautiful). It's a 3 tier cake (the "Destination Castle" one). We're planning on eating our top tier (and white chocolate topper) while it's fresh!! We debated saving it for a year, but we decided that we'd much rather enjoy it during the rest of our Disney vacation while it's delicious and fresh (our plan is to be at Disney for our first anniversary and to buy a mini version of our cake from the GF Bakery at that time)!! Our top layer is chocolate cake w/ raspberry mousse!!!!!!!!!!! Our first layer is chocolate cake w/ raspberry mousse and fresh raspberries and our second layer is marble cake w/ peanut butter cup icing. I have NEVER tasted more delicious cake then the cake we got to sample at our planning session....I'm so excited about this cake!

I didn't even think about how to get it back to NY! lol! oops! Well as Snowwhite said it probably will taste better fresh! I guess that is a good reson to go back to wdw for 1 year ann. --- "Dear We need a cake and only disney can make it" Maybe we can save the castle top!

We ate our top layer during our honeymoon, and saved the castle top. For us, it was just easier, and the idea of eating year old cake never appealed to me anyway

Against all odds our cake top made it home with us and is now in the freezer. With the meal plan we had and desserts every meal we couldn't eat cake when we got back to the room. Although it did taste good for breakfast.

My first wedding (not at Disney)...we saved the top tier for our first anniversary. BLECH!!!!!!!!!!!! If you do save the top tier, make sure it's properly wrapped and stored otherwise it's pretty icky after a year...lol

We put it in our fridge...we had a mini one at SSR....turned it up to HIGH. Then we took it on the plane back to NY with us. It made it back pretty well. We froze the top...hubby loves FoodSaver. Lets hope it tastes as good then!!

Hi! How many servings was your cake since you did an intimate wedding? The cost for yours was included in your total price, right?

If you have your pictures are uploaded on a site its very simple. RIght click on the pic and go to properties. Then copy the address. In your post select the add pic icon and then paste in the address. Always make sur eto preview the post first and check size etc.

Our cake made the flight home with my parents. The covered it tightly with saran wrap and put it in the freezer at OKW, then carried it home. It was actually better after a year than most cakes are fresh - maybe it was just the Disney magic?

Hey there!

As I recall, they charge by the number of people you are serving, not really per slice. But it's the best darn cake you'll ever eat!

That said, if you can get a baker named Richard at the Grand Floridian to make your cake, then you will thank yourself, him and maybe even me about two-thousands of a second after your first bite. I had multiple layers and flavors, and every single one was delicious!

The best part ... when it came time to eat the frozen top layer a year later, I swear to you, it was somehow still just as good as it was that night.

So don't be afraid, go crazy on the cake budget and beg, borrow, and/or steal if you have to, but get Richard to bake it.

We payed $12. a slice for our DLR wedding a few years back. We felt that it was high compared with other venues that we had seeked out. But we could have gone with other cakes that would ahve cost less. We ate our cake when we returned from our HM and were glad we did as it had freezer burn and didn't taste quite as nice as it had two weeks prior.
