Lady Godiva moved to Coventry with her husband the Earl of Leofric from Shrewsbury in around 1043. Leofric quickly became active in financial matters handling taxes. The tax burden on the peasant population quickly grew and they were having to work very hard, night and day to survive. Godiva became very worried about the people of Coventry because they were so tired and she asked her husband to wipe out the heavy taxes. He said he would, on one condition. He asked Godiva to ride through Coventry, naked on a horse. Leofric asked Godiva to do this because he thought she would say 'no'. However, Godiva said 'yes'. She rode through Coventry asking people to cover their eyes. As soon as she returned home to her husband he was so surprised she had done it, he dropped the taxes he had made immediately.
