Just talked to my niece who is at WDW meeting with her wedding planner...

She told me that Top of the World was offered as a spot for her reception.

Has anyone else heard about this yet? :confused3

IMO it was just a matter of time. I expect that all BLT guests will be allowed up. Disney is in the business of making money and since they are leasing the space from the BLT owners, they are free to do what they want.

Is the reception available before the normal 6:00pm opening? If yes, then why not make money while it's not being used by members? More business means it will be more likely to stay open.

I can get behind this especially if it helps defray our rapidly rising MFs. Just as long as the lounge is still available for members in the evenings.

It won't do anything with the MF's. Disney is in the wedding business, not DVC or BLT.

I believe Disney can do whatever they want with the Top of the World Lounge, including closing it or making it private. It is not part of the timeshare according to Disney literature. The following is taken from http://disneyvacationclub.disney.go.com/destinations/resorts/bay-lake-tower/

Top of the World Lounge

Located on the 16th floor of the Tower, this private lounge is accessible to Disney Vacation Club Members staying at the Resort. Light food, cocktails and other beverages are available. Access restrictions apply. Availability is limited and not part of the timeshare plan.

My understanding is that Disney calls TOWL a common element and after declaring BLT sold out, they transferred ownership of the common elements to the BLT association. That makes BLT owners responsible for utilities, upkeep, security, insurance, anything related to the property.

They now lease back TOWL and keep the profits from the lounge. That's one of the reasons that they opened up access to all DVC members.

I asked DVC who gets the lease money and how much is it, I never got an answer.

I'd expect that if it did get transferred to DVC then BLT ought to be getting the lease money but I'd also think it's a blanket lease and they have full use as they wish and can operate the lounge and also hold private events if they so choose to. If so then holding weddings there would not increase any lease money. And of course a lease can be $1.

Considering that EPCOT will block off parts of World Showcase so wedding party's can have fireworks pictures during Illuminations....I would not be suprised if Wishes became an option.

I believe TOTWL is a commercial unit not a comment element. That means DVC still retains the rights to it and all income from it including any expenses it incurs. And members have been told repeatedly that DVC can rent out the TOTWL to private parties. And the percentage of common elements a commercial unit gives to the association is .00000001 or basically nothing. It's all spelled out in the first declaration.

Would love to hear the $$$ involved. Boggles my mind to hear what people pay to get married in WDW.

My daughter got married at WDW and had her reception at the Napa Room adjacent to the California Grill, with pretty much the same view as TOWL. The room charge wasn't much more than any other room at the GF , and Wishes was piped in, and we had access to the observation decks on the roof. It was a nighttime wedding during December.

True story - when DD was 13 we were at GF and saw a wonderful carriage with a very lovely bride getting in to it. Horses up front and some slick looking dudes manning the entire operation.

DD said "Aw daddy - remember this some day!" I did remember this very special occasion! It was beautiful. My Princess is now 20 and what i have promised her - and willing to work as a contractor for your kids on:

  • You awake at the Super 8 - Northern Gate (either Gainesville or Ocala).
  • I own a GOLD colored '98 Saab Convertible! Extremely rare - rare only because nobody other then me like Saab's. They are fantastic vehicles which cost you 1000's on each and every repair.
  • This car is near mint - only a dozen or two door dings. A friend got sick in it in 2008 - what a night - but with the top down you can barely smell it anymore.
  • It can be rigged with ropes and can be towed by hand. We are a Quality FIRST company. Any fray in the rope will be fixed with Duct Tape before we arrive.
  • My son has friends willing to dress up in Colonial Costumes with White Wigs and Gloves to lug the car around. We also can make sure my son's friends are sober - at an additional charge.
  • Please understand Colonial Costumers are difficult to muster up - so - a few dudes may be in Shorts - but - trust me they will be quality shorts. We are firm and do not allow Bathing Trunks! Unless they are like Pastel with Flowers - we may say - ok to that.
  • Also keep in mind that our Gloves come from Minnesota - and - we have the right to substitute White for Black gloves (an have run out to Home Depot or Lowes on ocassion for work gloves) We get our authentic Colonial Wig's from JustMop's.com. I have Mop handles for sale if interested.
  • We guarantee all these kids will have original teeth - or high quality dentures. We provide no guarantee on Burping or other Natural Acts which is totally outside our control. AKA: Fine Print!
  • Subway sandwich reception also available at a separate price! In Sep and Oct we are running a special: Foot-longs starting at $25. Compare with Disney and save.

PM Me - Let's get er done!
