ok so in my other post I said my washer broke, its a GE brand, bare bones, but it lasted 16 years.
so i am getting a new one today, because lowes will bring it tomorrow, yeah!!!

I am thinking of a whirlpool........but am wondering if anyone still has a top loader, what kind you have and are you happy with it?

I have a Fisher Pakyl from Loews that i bought last year w/great recommendations from this site..

I have a GE profile top loader and really like it. I've had it a year and a half. It is very quiet.

We have all Whirlpool appliances including our washer & dryer. The washer is a top loader. I will be sad the day they stop making them. My BFF owns an applicance store in a different state so she "knows" her brands and styles. Of course she has top of the line in her home, but she did concede that the front loading wash machines do not do as great a job on getting the tough clothes clean.

As a mom of 5, sports players, dancers, etc, getting their clothes clean is important. While the front loaders save on water and even electricity they rely on gravity for the clothes to get clean.....as a top loader has an agitator that forces the clothes to move around and loosen dirt.

I know many do not agree and I am in the minority with my love of the top loader, but I just wanted to let you know what I know.

Good luck.

P.S. I do have some new washer/dryer envy. Both of ours are 12 yrs old, but in real time.....being used daily X4-5 loads = around 25+ years(kinda like dog years LOL!)

do you think they will stop making top loaders?
It does seem like everyone has a front load. I did look at them, just not sure I want to make the leap just yet. the mold smell thing bothers me, as our laundry is in the basement, so I am afraid I would really have the problem, even if i leave the door open.
our basement is not wet , or doesn't appear to be, but our dehumidifier fills up especially in summer.

I got a combo from Sears 1k for washer(front load)+dryer
Top loaders will cost you more in the long run because they use more(many times more)water, and the clothes come out soaking wet. So you save on the dry times when using a front loader also.

My house has a dedicated ventilation system called an HRV(heat recovery ventilator) that runs 24/7 so I don't notice any smells, we also leave the door open.

FRONT LOADER FTW!!

I have a Maytag, love it!!! It's about 7 years old and it works GREAT!

I have the Whirlpool Estate Top Load Washer.
It is the bare bones simple version.
3 load sizes Small, Med., Large... 3 Temps. Cold, Warm, Hot Wash...
4 wash choices...reg., perm press, gentle, quick wash...
Works great...

my clothes never came out soaking wet from my old top loader......in fact some came out almost dry........

I'm with you on this!! :thumbsup2 Our clothes get waaaay too dirty to throw in a front loader. I like to know that the agitator is scrubbing away at the grease and dirt.

Nope, mine don't come out soaking wet. :confused3 I can throw in 8 pairs of mens jeans and they come out practically dry. It takes very little time for them once they are in the dryer.

I also have a top loader and the only time the clothes come out soaking wet is when it is broken....:rotfl:

Alright guys, maybe I have over stated things a little, but that fact is the front loading washer will spin higher rpm's making your clothes less wet than a top loader.
I am a fan of technologies like this that reduce energy consumtion and are readily available......com'on...reduce your carbon footprint :)

And wow I can't believe I got a abbreviation on a DIS member..lol
ftw is *for the win*

I just bought a Maytag Bravia. I like it a lot. It is an energy star model. It spins very fast, so clothes are pretty dry. I prefer the top loaders, too.

LOL, my footprint is not so bad right now :)

I saw the maytag bravia at home depot. I am considering that one too. has a lot of nice features

Fisher Paykel top loader here also. It uses significantly less water than our old top loader - important on a well and septic system - clothes come out very wrung out so that I was able to cut down my drying time.

We went to all the big box stores and ended up at our local appliance store which everyone recommended anyways.

Oh, and it was much less than the front loaders. Pretty much the difference between being able to have a new washer and throwing up our hands in despair. Our old washer broke just days before Christmas. Nice timing.

Wow! And I thought I was the only one with a fisher paykel (judging from the odd looks I get when I tell people what brand I have)

It's very energy efficient, not quite as great as a front loader, but close. Uses less water, and spins out amazingly well. (like PP said)

Balancing the cost with the efficiency, I think it was a really good buy. I have had it fixed twice in the ten years we've had it - both times it was a small electrical thing in the control panel.

Highly recommended.

I have a whirlpool. I love it. I do not care for the front loaders. I will have a top loader as long as they keep making them!!

I had a front loader in my old home, moved to a top load again. I am glad.

The front loader did not hold as many at once, a big issue for me, and had an odd musty smell around the plastic seal. Did not get on the clothes, but I am sensitive to smells, and did not like it!

I also have the habit of finding one more thing to throw in after starting the load, cannot do that with a front loader.

I have a Maytag Atlantis washer & dryer and have never had an issue with it at all. It's 8 years old now and still going strong (knock on wood! ;) ).

I have a Whirlpool top loader. It works well. We've had it 7 years and it gets a lot of use. I know there's only 2 of us, but between bedding, blankets, towels, and clothes, I do several loads a week. Mine has 4 sizes, small to extra large; cold, warm, and hot options, and 4 cycles. I hope it holds up. My mom has a 29 year old Maytag that has never needed a repair! We know a handyman who is good with appliances so I hope that if it should conk out on us, he'll be able to fix it. A new washer isn't in the budget!

I would like a front loader just because I could wash our sleeping bags in it. Luckily, we have good friends with a front loader who lets me wash them in hers! She's had lots of problems with her set, though, and it's only 2 years old. I like the agitator-less top loaders. They seem like a decent compromise without the worry of leaks through the door or that mildewy-smell some people mention.
