How do u take the top part of the cake home? Do they ship it to ya? We're getting married on a Tuesday and probably staying in Orlando for the whole week. :dog2:

They box it up for you and you take it home with you. There are refrigerators in the Mods and deluxes for you to keep the top layer in.

We stayed at Wilderness Lodge and the front desk manager put the top of our cake in their fridge (I don't know if it's for general public use or for employees or what?) so you might want to ask at the front desk of your resort. The fridge in our room was too small for the cake top and my bouquet so keeping the cake top at the front desk worked out perfect for us.

We're packaging ours in rubbermaid, then putting it into my mom's freezer (she's staying DVC). Then she's flying it home with her when she leaves 2 days later. If your guests are leaving earlier you may want to send it with one of them, and then they can temporarily freeze it for you at home.

I would definitely try to find something (other than the little cardboard box they give you) to put your cake in!

We put ours in our room fridge (turned really low), and managed to get it home via plane.

But, our ceremony was on a Tuesday, and we flew home on Friday...by then, for all intents and purposes...the cake was stale, so we had to throw it out! Someday, I'm going to order another cake from Disney just to have that wonderful taste again!! :rotfl:

Anyway, getting it home can be done...just not sure the results are going to be anything you want to actually eat! :earboy2: :teeth:

Here's what our EM told us to do:

Take the fondant off the cake... tastes terrible!
Freeze the cake
Wrap the cake in clear wrap
Wrap the cake (in the clear wrap) with tin foil
Place in whatver storage thing you need or have

You should either have a firdge or they should be able to bring one up to you. I am not sure about the Value resorts, but the moderates and deluxes should be able to do it no problem. Don't just keep it in the fridge! We had a top tier left over from our taste testing and stuck in the firdge and nibbled away... it was stale and awful by the end of the week!!

After the wedding they boxed up the extra cake in the cake boxes I brought for the guests. Then they boxed up the top layer and put it in the Floridian convention centers freezer. We picked it up before we left Disney and put it in a better box ,then in a cooler bag to bring home on the plane. It was perfect.

You can ask for a fridge at the values, but it costs extra. We did this at the All-Star movies in May of 04 so that we could bring our own breakfast stuff (eg. cream cheese) and snacks to save a little money. What can I say, we are university students, need the extra money!

I know the whole eat the top of the cake thing on your first anniversary is tradition, but we decided to eat the top layer while we were in disney. The logistics of getting it home just seemed like a pain plus it would never taste as good. Why waste good cake?

There is a line item in the BEO that states they won't ship it to you. You will work it out, I am sure!

That's the best "excuse" I've ever heard!!! :rotfl2:

anyone have a dimension of the topper and the box they give? have to plan ahead for storage and transportation...also need to reserve freezer space at home :teeth:

but then again...might give in and eat the darn thing few nights later! nothing wrong ordering another cake a year later right?

We are hoping to plan our ceremony for a Tuesday or Wednesday and then will be staying in WDW until Saturday when we will leave for a week long DCL cruise. Sounds like there will be no way for us to get our cake top home with us with all that travelling around and the fact that they wont ship it. Oh well, not as good as the customs 'excuse' but I guess we'll have to eat all of ours too :teeth:

I suspect the dimensions of your top layer of cake depend on the type of cake you choose. I have no doubt that they will put it in a box that it fits in. When you say transportation- care transportation? Plane? Train? Fairy wings?

I don't think our's is going to make it home to be 100% honest with you! Red Velvet cake with dark chocolate mousse... I'm salivating just thinking about.

Here is what would be your best bet with your cake topper.

Enjoy it the day after your wedding, don't even try to take it home, If it had fresh fruit in the filling, your not going to want to eat this in a year.

The majority of Disney B/G's come back to WDW often. Keep the name of your planner and contact them a month before you plan to return to WDW. Ask them to arrange for a new cake topper to enjoy on your anniversary trip back. The recipe's for sponge cake and mousse fillings haven't changed , so your new cake top will taste the same as your wedding cake did. AND no annoying freezer burn taste!

it'll be transported by car....
but honestly it's probably not a tradition we'll follow... combination of delicious cake/FL heat/possible power outages? that topper's got no chance :rotfl:

I just wanted to add that I was told by a local baker that any cake frozen for a year will taste like styrofoam after a year in a freezer, so enjoy it while it's still fresh!
