K-SHE 95 in St. Louis is the oldest FM rock station in America & every Sunday morning they do a "Klassics" show for several hours. The songs you'll hear are typically not just classic rock, but some of the more obscure stuff. Recently, they compiled a list of Klassics A-Z and spent basically an entire year of Sundays playing them a few at a time, and then asked the listeners to vote on the top Klassics. Some interesting choices. Thought those of you into classic rock might enjoy the list:

Some of them I really like, some of them I never heard of (but I bet most of the ones I havent heard of, if listen to it, I would recognize it )

I've been listening to this station for most of my life & even I didn't recognize some of those :rotfl2: - but, as with you, I probably would recognize most of them if I heard them. :thumbsup2

edit: oh, and the winning song is from a St. Louis based band, so they kind of had home field advantage there :)

Crazy no Beatles or Eric Clapton

The listeners generally avoid the "obvious" choices when they get a chance to do a list like this. When the station does their annual "K-SHE 500" over Memorial Day weekend, the top 10 is usually some combination of:

Stairway To Heaven
Layla
Sympathy For The Devil
Freebird
etc

The list above is not entirely Clapton free, however (see #95) :thumbsup2

Derick and the Dominoes= Eric Clapton :) I always considered myself a Classic Rock expert but after looking at that list, I don't know crap:rotfl: I will say two of my most hated songs of all time are Freebird and Stairway To Heaven :confused3 I know, I'm weird

I agree with you and learned something new.

As popular as Freebird is, I know tons of people who hate it - or I should say I know tons of women who hate it. If any guys I know hate it, they're too ashamed to admit it. Stairway's my all-time favorite :)

Maybe if KC and the Sunshine Band sang it, I would have liked it better:lmao:

:dancer:

A KSHE listener here of course. I would say that I know most of the songs.:cool1:

Hey Gumbo, they still do the "friday night song".....Rock and Roll Weekend at 6pm.

We were talking to the kids and said we used to listen to that "getting ready to go out" in the 70's/80's. It happened to be almost 6 and they played it. Of course many eye rolls from the kids to us.:lmao:

I love Freebird. :)

Did I overlook Nirvana and Pearl Jam? I still like my grungy rock.

Plus I noticed a lack of hard rock. This stations must be more middle of road.

#15 Mama let him play is one of my favorite songs but was really only a hit in Canada and St. Louis. It is finally, within the last three months, available on ITunes. I have lived in St Louis my whole life except for 4 years of college but really have never listened to kshe. Last few years, SirriusXM gets my vote.

Kshe has been around since I was a kid. Since I went to a south St Louis Catholic schools, it makes me think "burnout" stereotype still if I see that t- shirt! Guess the nuns drilled that into my head. Lol.

Hello fellow STL peeps! I believe KSHE and I are about the same age. There are some songs on that list I forgot all about and haven't heard in years!

Yup, the weekend officially started then! My wife's a full-on Sammy nut, and fortunately my kids like his music as well. Was a proud moment to see my then 4-year-old belt out "Run For Your Life" word-for-word when my set was chosen for the "And that's what I call K-SHE" weekend

Typical St. Louis -- to put a local band that almost no one outside the Metro Area has ever heard of on the top of an all-time rock classics list.
This is a lovely city in many, many ways, but it can be terribly provincial in many others.

(FWIW, Mama's Pride's only national claim to fame is that it was a popular opening act for a fair number of roots rock headliners in the mid-1970's. They only released 2 albums in their heyday, and they lost their national recording contract in 1977. They are very popular here, however, and their annual reunion show is always sold out.)

You won't find Pearl Jam played on KSHE -- way too new. KSHE is all about the 60's and 70's. AFAIK, they play nothing that debuted after Saturday Night Fever came out.

My vote for best local performer of that era that very few people have ever heard of? Gayle McCormick. She was the lead singer of a short-lived band called "Smith"; they are best known for the song "Baby, it's You." McCormick had a great contralto voice and a very compelling stage presence, but unfortunately she ended up developing a substance abuse problem that took her years to get past. She is still alive and living in St. Louis, but she no longer sings professionally. Here is a clip of her singing Baby, It's You on a television show in 1969: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6atUODsWGs

Nirvana & Pearl Jam are in the regular rotation along with some of the more popular metal, they just didn't make the listener's "Klassic" list. You don't hear much Anthrax or the like on K-SHE, but Metallica & a little Megadeth are there.

Not true. They've always played current rock, if it meets their "standard" of rock. The new Rolling Stones tune is in rotation right now & both "Jeremy" and "Evenflow" get regular airplay, along with the occasional less-popular Pearl Jam song.

Now, the Sunday Morning Klassics show is obviously older stuff, although I heard Guns N Roses on there once - guess their stuff is becoming "older" now
