According to Dave Smith (recently retired Disney historian) the top five Disney movies are:
According to Box Office Mojo on the Internet, as of October 2011, the top-grossing Disney movies worldwide are: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Toy Story 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Alice in Wonderland, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. If you are looking at just animated films, the list would be: Toy Story 3, The Lion King, Finding Nemo, Up, and The Incredibles.

Neither of those lists represent my top 5! But then again, top grossing movies aren't necessarily the best movies period. Plenty of horrible movies make a lot of money. Having said that, I like almost all the movies on that list - I've never seen the new Alice and Wonderland (and have no desire to) and I thought Pirates at World's End was a terrible movie.

I wonder, if adjusted for inflation, how some of the older Disney movies would fare?

I wonder about that too.

I'm also somewhat amused that of the animated movies, four out of the five are actually Pixar computer animation rather than the traditional hand-drawn animation. Do you think Pixar was better at telling stories than Disney?

I wouldn't say that Pixar is "better" (although Disney did consult them when concerned about Tangled's storyline) but you can't argue with Pixar's success. Most everything they have produced has a great story for kids and adults. They are batting 1.00 where Disney has faltered especially in the '80's.

I am pretty surprised at The Incredibles being on the animated features listing. I knew the movie was popular, but honestly did not see it as being that big while it was in the box office. Even now, you don't see a ton of merchandise or people collecting Incredibles items.

Top grossing perhaps. But the top 5 best?? Hardly.

auroralark makes a good point--a far larger # of people are out there now to watch movies which drives up the gross. And the prices are so much higher as well.

I always wonder about this too. Especially now with the 3D movies charging even more. I wonder if there are any lists like this that do adjust for inflation? It'd be interesting to see those results.

Very surprising to me that Toy Story is the only animated movie on the first list. I really wonder what that list would look like if Johhny Depp had become a dentist instead of an actor.
