Top 3 Tips for First Timers.

This summer was my family's first trip, and I just wanted to share our biggest mistakes to keep other people from making them. They may seem obvious to those who have been to DW before, they may prove helpful to first timers.

1. LUGGAGE. While this is not necessarily a ''Disney'' tip, it is more of a traveling trip in general. Our plane had a few electrical problems and when we got off the plane, it was either go without luggage or not go at all. Obviously it was unanimous to go without luggage. The only problem was that it took three days to get there. This is what I was wearing on the plane (obviously unaware that this is what I would be wearing for the next 3 days), no joke:

  • Short jean shorts
    Silky sequined tank top
    4 inch wedges
Needless to say, spending three days wearing that was immensly uncomfortable. I actually ended up with blisters on my legs, and feet (by the way, my tip for blisters is above all- MOLESKIN!! - see tip #2), and had pains in my feet long before anyone else due to what I was wearing on my feet. But anyway, my overall tip is PACK SOME CLOTHES IN YOUR CARRY-ON.. If you do have a luggage mishap, you would be very happy you had it.

2. MOLESKIN. We all know how much walking you will do while in DW, so you should be well aware of the possibility of blisters (See #2). I recommend this above anything else. It was so helpful when I ended up with about 6 blisters and bought some moleskin at Panchito's (CS's gift shop type-thing), it really, really helped until they were healed. The only thing was getting it off your skin. It's kind of like pulling off a big band-aid that is sticky all over- and pulling off a blister

3. HYDRATION. This may seem silly to people who have been to DW lots of times, but for first-timers who don't quite know the extent of the Florida climate, it is a good tip. Always try to have a cold beverage with you if possible. Our first trip was this August, and we live in a much colder climate (right now we have about 30 feet of snow outide- typical for February), and knew that Florida would be much, much warmer, but didn't exactly know how much warmer. This may seem like an odd thing to say, but although my favorite beverage is water, I don't like drinking water- or drinking anything in general, and didn't have anything to drink the day we went to Typhoon Lagoon. It was one of the hottest days we spent in DW, and I got reaally bad heatstroke. We ended up having to go ho me immediatly because of how sick I got. It came on really suddenly, I got so dizzy I could barely see straight and just ran to the bathroom- and that's the extent of my description of getting heatstroke, don't worry ;). Typhoon Lagoon was our last day and last park, so it was a little upsetting to my little sister, but we had gotten a good 6 or 7 hours at the park, we were going to leave in an hour or two anyway, so it wasn't that big of a deal, but an hour is like an eternity to a 7-year-old. So I stongly advise everyone to bring a cold beverage, wear a hat, what ever it takes, because you'll thank yourself later- trust me!

Although these descriptions may seem like the vacation wasn't much fun, that is not at all what I meant. It was absolutly the time of my life- I have never had a better time. These little things didn't cause as much problems as I may have made it seem- they were just little mishaps, that's all. Overall, DW is my absolute favorite place on Earth, I would go back in a heartbeat.

I dont know if it is just me, but I cannot find that Moleskin stuff anywhere. I am probably looking in the wrong place, but are they in walmart or like special stores or can i just get it online. Thanks for the help in advance!!! =)

Walmart, Target, etc should have it as well as drug stores like CVS, look for the foot care aisle where they have the Dr Sholl's(sp?) stuff and inserts, it should be there. Good luck!

I appreciate the suggestions. The water and moleskin we will add to our plan for for our 1st WDW trip in Aug. Fortunately (or not) I learned the first lesson the hard way in Europe many years ago when my luggage flew a different airline than me:confused3 ...still haven't figured that one out...and didn't catch up for three days. We sound like twin travel fashion mishaps. I had 3" "jelly" wedges :scared1: (for those old enough to remember those) with a tank top. Who knew Germany could get so cold???:scared:

I found moleskin at walgreens, near the section where they have shoe inserts and other foot products. A tip for using moleskin if you already have a blister is to cut a hole in the moleskin where the blister is so that the moleskin surrounds it instead of covering it.

I agree with the packing clothes in your carryon. That is something I do for every trip, no matter where I go. You never know when your luggage will go one way and you another :lmao: - esp when you don't have a direct flight.
We also tuck our pj's and toiletries (I wear contact lens - so I don't want to get caught without my solutions). I'm not sure how this will work this trip, with the restrictions on shampoos, etc in a carryon, but I guess I'll figure it out.

Since we go every March, and live in CT, we fly down in jeans & sweatshirts, and many times we have changed in the airport to shorts before we get our checked bags (waiting for luggage is always a long wait :) ) . Putting on shorts after landing is our way to say - YEEEEEEEEEEEAAAHHHHHHHH, we're away from the cold!

Good tips, we always pack extra clothing in our carry on just in case and that moleskin went to WDW with us but we were lucky non of us had any feet problems.

I've read that drinking water tip and funny, we (me, DH and DS-9) didn't drink as much water as suggested and we were all okay. I think living in the tropics, we are used to the sticky hot weather. But it's a great tip nontheless!

I always put a change of underwear, shorts if I am going from a cold climate to a warm, and a bathing suit.

1.my tip is to have two good pair of walking shoes, dont waist time packing all of those cute sandals.

2.i bought the card holder at our resort and never had to worry about tickets for myself and my son. or my credit card getting lost. they stayed in the card holder that was around my neck the whole time. Loved It. Best 4.00 i spent there.

3.refillable mug. I thought oh my god 11.00 for a mug for each of us. But we really made use of them at the resort. After being so hot and thirsty.

Thats just my two cents. Everyone have a great trip!:hippie:

My tip for staying hydrated: every time you see a water fountain, take a drink! We don't mind the WDW water...we only had "bad" tasting water at the MK at an old fountain. But if you hate WDW water, take a drink from your bottle when you see a fountain. :) We stopped at just about every fountain we saw and never bought water. We felt fine. I'm likely to get heatstroke and prickly heat (rash) if I don't stay hydrated, so this has worked as a good reminder to me to drink lots of water at WDW!

Those Crystal Light On-the-Go packets are a nice way to combat that water fountain taste.

1. make sure you use Fast Passes (and hand off one's you haven't used to another family).

2. carry on extra clothes for when you first arrive (bathing suits and a change of clothes, suntan lotion).

3. Smile at everyone you pass and share the disney magic :) :)

:goodvibes

......not sure if anyone has prepurchased their tickets (we always do), they say to make a copy of all your tickets - front and back. If you lose them, you can get them replaced if you have the copies. If you have no copies, you have to buy new tickets - no way to trace them. Of course, if you don't prepurchase ...I don't think it's a problem!

After all our trips, we prepurchase the longer lenght non-expiring tickets - and are able to use left over days on our next trip.

1) Disposable rain ponchos (buy them at Target or K-mart, less than $1 each).

2) Comfortable shoes, moleskin, and bodyglide. Take care of your feet! You'll be sorry if you don't.

3) Don't be in too much of a rush to see "everything," otherwise, you'll be tired and cranky. Take some time to rest, people watch, go back to the hotel pool for an hour or two.

4) (I know it said "Top Three" but I have four!) Make dining reservations in advance. You can always cancel them if you change your mind while you're there, but you might not be able to get any table service restaurant reservations at all if you wait until you get there. No one wants to eat counter service food all week long!
