Toothache Help?

I managed to sleep for a few hours last night, which is better than nothing. Today is my first full day of antibiotics. I don't know if it's a placebo effect or what but I had two doses yesterday and one so far today and the pain has lessened considerably. :cloud9: I'm going to try some toast later.

My experience was 24 hrs of antibiotics equaled no pain whatsoever.

It is amazing how much pain the pressure of the infection causes.

It's not - the effect is very real in that as the bacteria is being arrested, inflammation to the area itself and the irritation to the surrounding nerves is rapidly decreased. Ultimately the cause of the infection needs to be resolved but in the meantime, the antibiotics WILL return you to virtually pain-free, provided you take them all, as directed. Whatever you do, don't stop when you feel better - that allows only the "strongest" bugs to survive and the infection will eventually blaze back with a vengeance.

Wonderful updates, BSH! I missed yesterday's updates but just, wow. Such a long, drawn out ordeal for you. So good to hear you are getting that pain relief finally. Hoping all goes well in the time before the root canal. As @ronandannette said above, make sure to take all of the antibiotic, even if feeling better.

So good to see your updates, BSH.'s

I still can't get over the dentist was going to have you wait an entire week to be seen, and you only lucked into getting a diagnosis and treatment because of a cancellation and you being on the phone with the office at the right time. A tooth infection can be life threatening quickly because of the proximity to the brain. I know you were probably just so glad to be seen and have relief, but I'm wondering if you should ask the dentist how you should go about receiving emergency dental care if needed in the future.
THIS. I’ve just had a root canal that was a really badly abscessed tooth. It was AGONY. My dentist brought me in first thing before her appointments started for the day and froze my mouth as soon as I sat in the chair so I could make informed decisions about the tooth while I wasn’t in pain. I cried with relief.

Leaving someone in that kind of pain is inhumane. IMO don’t take on so many people in your practice that you can’t schedule in emergencies quickly. That’s poor practice.

:grouphug:BlueStarryHat, please do get some 💤I'm so thankful to God to hear that you finally, finally being the operative word, got treated! I completely with everyone else that for the dentist to knowingly leave you on pain period and for such a long time was horrible and all kinds of wrong! I do pray you are able to have backup options for the future. You just take care and definitely try to eat something, too.Feel better, my friend:flower3:

AGONY is a good way to put it. I have also had it happen (a few times) so I know the pain. I was in a meeting one day when the searing pain came on so suddenly I had to tell my boss I had to leave and literally ran out the door. It was weird because I had already had a root canal in that tooth but lo and behold I had to have a second one. Crazy.

With an infection, bacteria multiply. In a small, enclosed space like a tooth or a root, it just gets to a point where they’re growing and they have nowhere else to go, so pressure develops; hence the excruciating pain.

I also agree with @pigletto that it’s inhumane to have left you waiting a ”week” when you were in this type of pain. Thankfully they - serendipitously - had an opening. I’m thinking that your going to the ER shook them up a bit, knowing some eyebrows were going to be raised.

Hope you are feeling much better today, @BlueStarryHat !!
I am having no pain at all, so long as I keep my food and drink either hot or at room temperature. The exposed nerve doesn't like cold stuff. The infection is clearing up nicely, I guess, from the lack of pain. I'm taking my antibiotic faithfully every 8 hours. I don't know how people survived without antibiotics.

Thanks for asking! And thanks to everyone who spared me a thought these last few days-I'm sure it helped tremendously. :flower3:

I remember reading that if you really want something cold (like me, the Dr Pepper addict), use a straw that you can go past your teeth. However, I agree that your best off if you can stick with hot or room temperature.

They pulled the tooth out of their mouth.
I often think about animals who have this type of pain but can’t tell us. Horses, dogs, etc. We have to look for signs, like, they can’t eat or get irritable. Poor things.
