Toothache Help?

I have a terrible toothache in the upper left side of my mouth. The dentist can't see me until April 19th, so I've got to tough it out for a week.

Anybody got any remedies? I'm willing to try anything at this point. I've tried Anbesol, but that only works for a few minutes.

I had a terrible toothache while waiting for a root canal. The dentist prescribed me pain medication, but it did not help as well as 800mg of ibuprofen.

Orajel or advil. If you can see a doctor before the dentist appointment, that may help too.

I'm yet to encounter a gum/tooth ache that is not remedied by this.
It's liquid sorcery - I stopped saying magic doesn't exist since I tried this.
I bought mine at CVS - but it's everywhere online.

Rinse with salt water. Try to keep your mouth clean but don’t irritate the soft tissue by brushing too much though. If you’re still in a lot of pain for over 24 hours, request antibiotic which usually takes away the source of pain within 48 hrs. The dentist or your doctor can prescribe. While waiting for a dentist to be able to see me when I had a terrible toothache, I used something with cloves, which helped quite a bit. Before that, my mother was soaking gauze in whiskey to help.

Thanks for the suggestions, everybody. I've been on the phone with the dentist off and on all day, @Dan Murphy . They said they'll call me if they can fit me in sooner and that the dentist won't prescribe without seeing me in person.

I'll try the cloves...maybe I'll soak myself in some whiskey before I go to bed.

Try a warm compress or heating pad on a lower setting. It won’t take the pain away but it can help take the edge off

It's very possible that you've got an infection working it's way towards an abscess. Only antibiotics will help. I'd consider an MD if that's going to be quicker than the dentist. Tooth pain is the worst - sorry.

If you are in that much pain it's surprising they won't find a way to fit you in sooner. If you have an infection setting in, that can become very serious very quickly. A dental emergency shouldn't be put off for a week!

I agree with both Ronandannette and Jalapeno_Pretzel, BlueStarryHat. Before a needed root canal years ago, my dentist prescribed an antibiotic that definitely made a huge difference. I really do think given this is more of an emergency need that your dentist should be able to see you. Please take care and feel better.

I'd see if there is an emergency dental practice in the area. We have one up here, and everyone I know who has needed them says they make appointments within 24 hours, maybe even the same day. I guess they don't do repair work for emergencies, but will prescribe antibiotics or pain medications as needed. Good luck. Tooth pain is the worst.

No emergency dentists, I'm afraid. I thought about going to the ER...closest hospital is Cooper in Camden, but my cousin (an EMT) told me they'd likely only tell me to take Tylenol and see my family dentist. Toothaches are low priority. I'll be calling the dentist again tomorrow to tell them I really need to be seen. Tooth pain *is* the worst. I get occasional migraines, and I'd almost rather have one of them.

As it's on the upper jaw, you also might want to try stong decongestant/sinus pain meds, and also steam.

Sometimes an infection in the sinuses can cause wicked upper tooth pain. A few years back I had what I *thought* was a raging toothache, but the dentist pointed out that I'd had a root canal & crown done on that tooth. Turned out it was a sinus infection that was affecting my upper jaw.

Oh that sounds awful, sad this is happening to you.

There is a prescription called Magic Mouthwash that numbs really well, truly though lidocaine alone would work if that is a thing. If the dentist won't give it to you maybe Urgent Care would or your regular Dr if you explain what is happening. Just be mindful insurance may not cover the Magic Mouthwash blend and it is $, I think I did Good RX for this one, but would ask for whatever the cheapest lidocaine mouthwash they can give would be since that covers the pain part.

A mouth sore or abscess is medical not dental so if you say you think you have that it will get someone to help you, staff get very caught up in the descriptive words of patients when we can't diagnose ourselves.
