I'm a long-time lurker who loves the Rumors and News board info. Anyway....

Has anyone checked out Disney's Toontown Online yet?

From the WDC Annual Report (Imagineering section):

"R&D's Virtual Reality Studio also teamed up with the Disney Internet Group to develop Toontown Online, a cutting-edge multi-player game in which thousands of players will be able to create and control their own cartoon characters and play together to help Mickey Mouse and friends save the city of Towntoon from the forces of evil."

The "forces of evil" are business-suited robots called cashbots, lawbots and bossbots (there may be others, I can't recall). They are out to convert wacky Toontown into drab business buildings. The toons defeat the Cogs (as all bad guys are called, as a group) by using toony gags like pies in the face, squirting lapel flowers, etc. Seems the Cogs can't take a joke. The Cogs fight back with red tape, document shredding, etc.

Now, I'm no psychiatrist or anything, but this seems like a very thinly veiled jab from Imagineering back at the accountants (cashbots), lawyers (lawbots) and management (bossbots). In fact, I found that aspect of it even more entertaining than the actual game.

You can sign up for a free three-day trial with the option to subscribe for $9.95 (sign-up fee + first month) and then $5.95 per month after that.

Just wanted to post this (hadn't seen it here yet) and see what the Rumors and News regulars had to say about it, since they seem most in touch with the behind-the-scenes at Disney.

I checked out an early beta quite a long time ago - nothing to get excited about, basically a chat room with graphics.

Sounds like "The Sims Online"

I played a trial version and thought it was pretty damn cool. I have a 6 year old DD and we played together until the trial ran out. We both enjoyed it very much however I would never pay a monthly fee to play the game. I would consider buying a software package with a 1 time cost.
