Too late for building request?

I just left a message with my AAA agent to try to request Samoa building for our upcoming trip. I wasn't going to request any particular building, but my DS (19) rolled his ankle playing basketball this past week, and he is not doing so well. They are sending him for an MRI on Monday to try to see the extent of his ligament injuries, but they say it is a severe sprain and could take up to six weeks to heal. We are leaving for Disney in 19 days, so I hope it won't be too late for the agent to put in a building request. Does anyone have any better suggestions than Samoa? We have never stayed at the Poly and we were so looking forward to it. Oh well, this will put a little dent, but we will still have a blast!:)

Can't help you with building locations at Poly, but it is not too late to put a request on your ressie; room assignments are not done until about 3 days ahead. Sorry about your son, but on the bright side you will have a good reason for that wheelchair entrance to the rides!;)

I've found that it often seems like room "requests" are done at the counter at check in.

If the room is available, you will probably have no problem.

This has been my experience, too. I am always assigned an original room which has nothing to do with my requests, pretty obvious to me the requests are never read and everything is computerized (at least for me!). Once I did get my requests by being polite and begging to the CM at check-in!

Then there are other DISers here who always get their requests at check-in, and have trouble understanding why some of us never do. :confused3 They seem to think Disney always "tries" to fill requests, and if you don't get it, it's because the place you asked for is simply unavailable or your requests were unreasonable. I find this simply isn't true- it's the luck of the draw whether anyone reads your requests and fills them.

Even so, the OP can call and make the request, but be ready and prepared to nicely ask for Samoa at check-in! :)

Ask your AAA agent. My requests with my AAA agent have been met in the past.

You might not want to request just Samoa but broaden the request to a room close to the GCH if you're concerned about the walking. Samoa is a small longhouse, so it's not always available. You might also want to request a first floor room, and again, the less "picky" you can be, the better your chances.

Thanks everyone for all the info. I will keep my fingers crossed.:)

Also make note that your son has a condition that warrants this request and you are most likely to get it! Bring along a note from his doctor you can probably use that to get in the handicapped isle for the rides to i seen alot of people with casts or leg problems going in the handicapped lane where you basically get right in and all you need is a dr note I believe you take it to guest services and you get a special card.

Actually, there is no front of the line card - not even for those in wheelchairs - sometimes the wait is longer.

Have a look at the DisAbilities Board as they may have some suggestions = even short term still presents a valid medical need.

Hope you have a wonderful trip!

Most attractions have what are called "Mainstream Access", which means that the line is wheelchair accessible and guests using wheelchairs wait in the same line with everyone else. AK and the Studio were built with all Mainstream Lines. Newer attractions at Epcot and MK were built with Mainstream access and older attractions had Mainstream Access added if possible.
A few attractions (mostly at MK) have handicapped entrances, but those sometimes mean a longer, not a shorter wait. For example, at Small World in April, we waited an extra 25 minutes to board compared to people who could walk on. In some attractions, people with wheelchairs can't board at the regular boarding place because it is not accessible. For those attractions, boarding for people with wheelchairs are at the exit - but the 'routing' to the exit usually happens right before the 'regular' boarding place. It pretty much evens out - about 20-25% of the rides you may get on faster, about 50-60% will be the same and the rest will be longer, sometimes much longer.

The card is called a Guest Assistance Card and it is not meant to (and usually won't) shorten the wait in line. He won't need a Guest Assistance Card since the CMs can see that he has a wheelchair. Guest Assistance Cards are mostly for invisible disabilities.

Follow the link in my signature to the disABILITIES FAQs thread. There is information about renting wheelchairs and ECVs (power mobility scooters). Since he is over 18, you could rent a wheelchair or an ECV for him.
There is also informaiton in that thread about Guest Assistance Cards.
