Once the dew point is above 65% or so, the air outside is considered "oppressive".. You could slice it with a knife..
I think I misread your post. I thought you were DISAGREEING with your DH. Now I get it!
It's just so astonishing to me because the one thing that keeps him going all week at work is the fact that he can come up here on the weekends and have campfires at night.. (He's early this week - decided to take a vacation day tomorrow..) 
We have about a 4' overhang above our patio screen door, and it was open (I like to listen to storms) and it was coming down so sideways, it soaked the floor before I saw it!
