September 30, 2010

ET has learned that the Oscar-nominated actor Tony Curtis has died.

His daughter Jamie Lee Curtis’ rep has confirmed to ET the news of the legendary actor’s passing.

The Clark County Coroner told the Associated Press that the actor died of cardiac arrest on Wednesday at 9:25 p.m. MDT in his Nevada home.

Curtis, whose real name was Bernard Schwartz, was perhaps most known for his comedic turn in Billy Wilder’s ‘Some Like It Hot’ with co-stars Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences acknowledged Tony’s talents in 1959 when he received an Academy Award nomination for his role in the movie ‘The Defiant Ones’ starring opposite Sidney Poitier.

Tony was married six times. Jill Vandenberg Curtis was his current wife whom he married in 1998.

Tony was born June 3, 1925. He died at the age of 85.

What an interesting life he has had.

I don't mean this with any disrespect but I am finding it ironic that he died just a week after Tony Curtis. I always want to confuse them & their daughters: Carrie Fisher & Jamie Lee Curtis. I mean I know who is who; I just have to actually think about it so I got it right. And now they are both gone.....:sad2:

edit: of course, I meant Eddie Fisher. Thanks EMom!

You must mean Eddie Fisher. Lord knows I could never confuse those two. One was average in the looks department.........And then there was Tony Curtis. ;) What a beautiful thing he was in his day. I halfway felt sorry for Janet Leigh. She was no slouch in the looks department, but Tony Curtis was prettier than her. I'd hate to be married to a man who was prettier than I was. :headache:

I absolutely adored him! Got to meet him once and he was so nice and handsome. He should have been honored years ago by the Academy Awards!!! May he rest in pease.

I always had to think about which was which before, so it makes sense that I was getting confused at the mentions today of what I thought had happened a few days before. :headache: That emoticon is at my own silly brain and the way it skims instead of reads sometimes...

They were only 3 years apart in age, so it's not that surprising that they might go around the same time...

(and let's not forget Joely Fisher when talking about EF's (famous) kids...she was really funny on Ellen!)

See what I mean??? They are just interchangeable in my mind. :sad2: Thanks for catching this!!

Bumbershoot, nice to know I wasn't the only one who confused them!

I still smile whenever anyone recalls Tony's famous line in The Prince Who Was A Thief, one of the sword and sand epics from the early "beefcake" phase of his career.

Early in the movie while holding the lovely Piper Laurie is in his arms, Bernie Schwartz from the Bronx (who adopted the stage name Tony Curtis on arrival in Hollywood) gracefully utters...

"Yonder lies da castle of my fadder da King."

I like his old movies a lot. My heart goes out to his family and fans.

Sad.

Just saw Jamie Lee Curtis on DWTS, cheering for Jennifer Grey.

Hope the rule of 3's doesn't happen here . . .
