Ok, so I have seen some photos of the Tonga Toast and it looks amazing. It looks like something I would like to try, but could someone explain just exactly what it is? I have seen it on Kona's menu and Rainforest Cafe's menu. Is it available anywhere else? Where is the best place to get it? Is it the same at both places? I'm trying to get my ADR list ready for a July trip. Any info would be helpful!

Thanks,

Dena

Tonga Toast is delicious! Take a thick slice of sourdough bread, slice a horizontal pocket and stuff it with banana. Then, dip it in french toast batter, deep fry and roll in cinnamon sugar

I would get it at Kona because you can also get good coffee :coffee: or you can get it at Captain Cooks (CS at Poly). I seem to remember hearing that Rainforests Tonga Toast is different, but I'm not positive.

I've read that Rainforest's version is different too but have never had it.

Are you sure Tonga Toast is dipped in French toast batter? I've been enjoying it for 26 years and have never detected batter under the crust.:confused3 Regardless, it's very tasty and very rich.

One difference between Captain Cook's and Kona Cafe's versions is that it is served with strawberry coulis at Kona....and also if you order it from room service.

We eat at the Kona Cafe every trip. I love the Tonga Toast. It is very filling and the coffee is excellent. I can't say that I have noticed batter either.

Yep, that's what makes it stuffed french toast ;) I've had the recipe in my Disney cookbook--"Cooking with Mickey around our world" for years. DH makes it for me for my birthday every year :goodvibes

Tonga Toast I go to the Kona Cafe for it. It is the best and a killer. You are stuffed after you eat it and it's is so worth it :thumbsup2 The OP described it the best.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I find the Tonga Toast absolutely disgusting. It's so sweet and heavy, I can't eat it. Not to mention it's incredibly gluttonous, I can't even imagine how many calories are in that thing.

What a sweet husband!:goodvibes

I just found it in my cookbook too...same one. I'd forgotten the coating completely and really don't notice it. But it's only one egg, 1/4 cup milk, a teaspoon of vanilla for two servings so not much.

Does your DH's version taste like Kona's? We tried it once at home many years ago and it did not. Maybe we didn't let it sit long enough?

Our pink Leilanis are good though.:cool1:

It is the best! You will love it!

There's three in our family, so one orders Tonga Toast, one orders eggs, and one orders the fruit plate. We share all three meals 3 ways so we aren't overwhelmed by the Tonga Toast. It's perfect!

I always order the fruit plate and just beg a corner of my DH's order of Tonga Toast these days. I like your strategy.

I did split an order of TT with my daughter from room service this month....best I'd had in years!:thumbsup2

I had it 2 days ago. Had to try it. I did like it. Honestly I went to Kona Cafe for the coffee after drinking the Nescafe stuff I wanted some good coffee. I liked the Tonga Toast. It was a splurge for sure (calories wise). The blueberry or macadamia nut pancakes sounded good too.

Like JMD, my DH found it too sweet :crazy2: -- how blasphemous!!!! As if such a thing as "too sweet" can apply to anything!!!!!! :)

I am looking forward to it again .... SOON!!!!!! :thumbsup2

I guess I didn't really answer the OP question. All I can say is that it tasted really really really really good!

That's an excellent idea. While I do like TT I can really only stand a few bites of it in the morning. It's so sweet and heavy that I feel like a big fat piggie after eating it!:sad2:

Tonga toast at the rainforest cafe IS NOT EVEN CLOSE to as good as the Kona Cafe kind.

Everyone has to try it just once!I love it, but could never do parks after. Its a last day before we leave kind of treat. The first person that described it gave a wonderful description and it comes with a delicious strawberry sauce! It is very heavy, and very filling, and yes bad for you, but its a treat. And its delicious!

I think he's a keeper :thumbsup2 He really outdid himself this year, it was an all Disney birthday. TT for breakfast, LeCellier cheddar cheese soup & pretzel bread for lunch, seafood crepes (from the cookbook, adapted a little over the years) and the Milky Way cake from Beaches & Cream for my bday cake :cool1:

I think his version tastes like Kona's, but it's been a few years since I've had Kona's. He's never made the strawberry or raspberry coulis, but that wasn't on it way back when

A keeper for sure!:goodvibes

I was hoping you'd hop back on this thread. Will you please ask him what his secret is for TT? We only tried it once many moons ago and it wasn't close.

You're right...the coulis is rather new. I think it was added about the time that Captain Cooks started serving TT.

In case anyone is interested, here is the recipe for Tonga Toast, direct from the Kona Cafe at Disney’s Polynesian Resort

TONGA TOAST
Serves 4
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 8-inch loaf sourdough bread
2 bananas, peeled
1 quart canola oil, for frying

For a breakfast splurge, delicious Tonga Toast is one of the most-requested recipes from Walt Disney World Resort.
This morning treat has been on the menu at Disney’s Polynesian Resort for more than 30 years. Don’t count calories until lunchtime.

Mix sugar and cinnamon with a fork in a shallow bowl until thoroughly blended; set aside.
Slice the bread into four 2-inch-thick slices.
Cut each banana in half crosswise, then each piece lengthwise.
Place a bread slice flat on the counter and tear out just enough from the middle (do not tear all the way through) to stuff half a banana into;
repeat with each bread slice.
In a large pot or a deep fryer, heat the oil to 350°F; use a candy thermometer to make certain the oil does not get any hotter, or it will burn.
Gently place one bread slice into the oil for 1 minute or until light brown. Turn and fry for another minute on the other side.
Remove from fryer, drain on paper towels, then toss in sugar and cinnamon mixture.
Repeat for each piece.
Serve with a drizzle of warm syrup.

ENJOY!:thumbsup2

BTW, I just got through reading every post and see there has been some discrepancy about a batter?? This recipe is from WDW, and is posted on the WDW MomsClub (which I got into because I applied for the Mom's Panel). So perhaps it has changed a bit over the years. At the top of the recipe card it says, "Delicious Disney Cookbook 2006".

Hope you can get this link:

Wow, that sounds delicious! I'm almost drooling here. :rotfl:

Too bad I made an ADR at Kona Cafe for dinner and not breakfast. :( Oh well, I'll have to try it next time I guess.

I am definitely trying Tonga Toast on our next trip. I have heard so many raves about it!
