Tonga Toast Worth the Trip to Kona?

One thing I've never tried at WDW is tonga toast. Is it worth the trip over to Kona for breakfast? We don't have anything else that would take us over there. If we decide to skip Kona, we'll eat breakfast at Main St. Bakery that day, another thing I've never done. Any advice?

I have been saying that I am going to have Tonga Toast "this trip" for a few years. This time I am definately going to do it. However, I am not going to eat at Kona but rather Capn Cooks which is the Polys counter service. Some people like it and some don't (say its to sweet). I figure I can take the bus to the MK early then over to the Poly eat and be back at MK when the park opens.

If you like deep fried, sugary things you will enjoy the Tonga Toast. Personally, it is too heavy for me. My solution is to order it grilled instead of fried. It is much lighter (although it is still huge and very filling) and much less sugary as the cinnamon sugar does not stick as well when it is grilled. I absolutely love it grilled while there are many who prefer it in its original form.

As the previous poster said, if you want to try the Tonga Toast but save a little money, head to Captain Cook's at the Poly instead. It's the quick serve location so the food is less expensive but it's the same Tonga Toast they serve upstairs at Kona.

I never knew it came grilled. Score one for me!
I loooove Tonga toast, and I find the price to be extremely reasonable as well.

We are trying Kona for the first time because I want the fable Tonga Toast, too. Main St Bakery has some good stuff, but Poly is worth the trip. Beautiful and so convenient to MK anyway.

I have never had any trouble getting it grilled but other DISers have reportedly been told it is not possible. If your server tells you this simply explain that you know someone :wave2: who gets it this way every time and have them ask the chef. Again, I have never had any trouble getting it grilled and I get it on neatly every trip. Enjoy!

My DW and I love Kona for breakfast, but not necessarily for the Tonga Toast. IMHO, it's too much for one person. We usually get two entrees and share the TT.

Personally, I would go there for the pineapple macadamia nut pancakes and coffee alone. :goodvibes The Poly atmosphere and friendly service is icing on the cake.

We often save breakfast there for our last morning before going to the airport to return home.

is the tonga toast worth a trip to Kona...we'd have to say NO. Way too sweet, heavy, ooey-gooey for us. Three of us split one order & left half of it. Just too much.

BUT, the pressed pot Kona coffee and the Big Kahuna breakfast platter are definitely worth a trip to Kona.

The tonga toast at the counter service does not come with strawberry sauce (just regular syrup)

Ahhhhh Tonga Toast has ben a topic of conversation for months around here! I'm going to WDW in NOv. with 5 friends & some of us have never had it - and we're sooo excited to go to Kona for it!

I don't know firsthand but I've read more than once on here that the TT from Captain Cooks does not come with the strawberry compote.

so because of these boards I have made a ressie at Kona for our Nov. trip jus to try the tonga toast, soo excited. quick ques. does the grilled verison taste much different than the fried verison??

Yummmm... We always have Tonga toast our last morning, but you guys have made me so hungry that I want it our first morning. Only 12 days!

BTW... Tonga toast is best without the syrup! Also, those Macadamia Nut Pancakes are almost as good!

Off to the online site to try and make some ressies!

I say YES! We make a trip over on one of our MK days and get it at the counter service place at the Poly. For those who say it's too filling - I recommend one person gets the Tonga Toast and the other get another breakfast and then you can both share. YUM!

We don't think its worth it. We heard so much about this toast, we went there specifically for that, ordered it and it was just BLAH!

Its funny but the first time I tried the Tonga toast I thought it was just okay. I didn't even realize what a big deal it was until I started reading this board. The next time we went back I tried it again and I loved it! I think the first time was just an off day. It is very filling and I can usually only eat half. I also agree it doesn't need any syrup. Now we have to go to Kona cafe on the last day of every trip for breakfast. It has become a tradition.

It is very sweet and very rich. You have to like bananas and sugar. And fried (although, as said, grilled is an option). Its also fairly LARGE - lots of bread is needed to stuff bananas into.

There are people for whom no trip to Disney is complete without Tonga Toast - you may go and have a piece and discover you are one of them. There are people who, blinded by the rave reviews, have it - and then wonder what they were thinking - they don't even like bananas!

Its the Krispy Kreme of WDW.....

Glad to hear it can come grilled, we plan on going to Capt Cook for it on our way out of WDW and after a wk of free food I will need something NOT fried! LOL

I do not know if you can get it grilled at Captain Cook's. I have only had it at Kona. I am not sure of the set-up at Captain Cook's, but I do know that the two restaurants do not share any kitchen facilities. I do plan to try CC's on our next trip and am hoping that I can get the grilled version there but for right now it is an unknown.

It is definitely worth the trip and since the Poly is off the monorail you can get to most of the parks relatively easily.
