OK I've got a dilema - should we have Tonga Toast at Kona Cafe (Poly) or banana stuffed french toast at Boatwrights (POR)?
I've not had either and love banana and cinnamon - so which is best and WHY?

Other than the name, they're pretty much the same. We find Kona Cafe more convenient, since we can take a taxi there from our resort, have breakfast, and then take the monorail over to the Magic Kingdom. Gotta get my Tonga Toast fix!

thanks for that - does it go by any other name elsewhere? We're hoping to visit most of the resorts at some time to see the Christmas decorations, so that would make it easier to find.

I voted for Tonga, but, I like them both. I think I need to have both together to have a really good comparison. Switching back and forth between restaurants doesn't give one an oportunity to really compare.

I'm willing to try!

The only other place to get it, as far as I know, is the counter service place at the Poly, Captain Cook's.

It's the EXACT same thing. DH got the stuff french toast from Boatwrights and then the next morning I got the much-hyped Tonga Toast at Kona and it was IDENTICAL. I'd tasted his and he tasted mine and we were 100000% sure of it!

So unless you're itching to see one of those resorts, don't break your neck to get to one over the other.

It was yummy though! :thumbsup2

thanks for the confirmation. Think what we'll do is go to Kona or Captain Cook's for a very early breakfast on our way to MK EMH - sooo looking forward to it as it sounds soooo yummy:)

OT but here are a couple of Tonga Toast recipes:

1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 loaf sourdough bread (8 inches long)
2 bananas, peeled
1 quart canola oil, for frying
PREPARATION:
1. Mix the sugar and cinnamon with a fork until thoroughly blended; set aside.
2. Slice the bread into four 2-inch-thick slices.
3. Cut each banana in half crosswise, then each piece lengthwise.
4.Place a bread slice flat on the counter and tear out just enough from the middle (do not tear all the way through) to stuff half a banana into it; repeat with each slice of bread.
5. In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the oil to 350 degrees F; use a candy thermometer to make certain the oil doesn't get any hotter, or it will burn.
6. Gently place one bread slice into the oil for 1 minute, or until light brown.
7. Turn and fry for another minute on the other side.
8. Remove bread from the pot and toss it in the sugar and cinnamon mixture.
9. Repeat for each piece.

4 slices of good white bread (1 inch thick, try texas toast bread)
2 bananas (sliced)
8-12 strawberries (sliced)
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1/2-1 teaspoon vanilla
whipped butter
maple syrup
chopped pecans

1.Mix the sugar, milk, cinnamon, egg, and vanilla in a shallow pan. ( Another way I've seen this is to leave the sugar and cinnamon out of this step mix them together and then sprinkle them over the toast after it has cooked, whatever sounds good to you, I've done them both).

2.Dip each slice of bread, flipping it over to saturate both sides.

3.Fry in a frying pan that has been preheated on medium heat with a little butter in the bottom of the pan.

4.Brown both sides, remove from heat and garnish each slice of bread with 1/2 a banana and 2-3 strawberries and desired amounts of butter and syrup and nuts -- enjoy

this is making me soooo hungry! I can't wait to try it - still 2 months to go tho'!

Thanks for the recipes, but I make it a rule NEVER to cook with oil at home, that's probably why I'm looking forward to it so much (and due to the magic of Disney, everything is calorie-free, right?):rotfl:
