Tomato salmonella warning

There''s a tomato recall out today . Make sure the ones you have are okay they said romas and round reds(huh) never heard of them. Vine and cherry tomatoes. For more info check the cdc website.

Just to clarify, the ones you should not eat raw are Roma, plum & Red Round or round red, which pretty much includes all the large tomatoes. They said that for some reason the ones with the vine still attached are okay. Smaller tomatoes such as grape & cherry tomatoes are supposed to be okay.

They're recommending you stay away from salad bars & many restaurants have removed tomatoes from the menu.

The Food and Drug Administration said consumers should avoid raw red plum, red Roma or round red tomatoes, which have been tied to 145 infections reported since mid-April.

Consumers may continue to eat cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached and tomatoes grown at home, the FDA statement said.

On Thursday they were warning people in New Mexico & Texas, but over the weekend they added Illinois and as of this morning on GMA, they were recommending everyone avoid raw tomatoes.

While the specific type and source of tomatoes is under investigation, the centre comments that "preliminary data suggest that large tomatoes, including Roma and red round are the source."

At this time, the FDA is advising that consumers in New Mexico and Texas should limit their tomato consumption to cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, and tomatoes grown at home.

I stopped by McD's at lunch time and there was a notice on the drive thru window that none of the sandwiches would have tomatoes on them due to the recall.
