Anyone else like to explore those DARK caves at TSI?

I've been in many "real" caves, here in the midwest and I think they did a pretty good job of making the ones at MK scary and realistic enough for me.

(and a bit TIGHT at times, too.)

My kids love them to! My DS loves the fact that they make his bigger sister kinda nervous in places and he uses it to his full advantage.(hehe)

You have to love brothers! DH loves the fact that I get nervous if I don't know which corner he's around or what's coming up! Boys will be boys! :p But, the caves and bridges are fun--I recommend them during cooler months! :thumbsup2

What's really cool are the "super secret" places you can find in the caves. And other places on the island where maybe you really shouldn't be.

The caves are pretty freaky. I like to scream, while I'm racing towards the exit. Then I jump in the air and land flat on the ground as if I were trying to get away from something and scare unsuspecting guests. ;) Gets 'em every time :)

On our last trip, we didn't get to TSI. My 5 year old son would LOVE it though! I saw, on the Travel Channel's Wilderness Lodge special, that the host used a flashlight to guide her way through the cave. Do they have flashlights available on the island? Should we bring one? Or is it light enough that a flashlight is not necessary?

One more TSI question....has anyone ever found the hidden paintbrushes? Do they still do that? Is the prize still a fastpass? Just wondering if it is worth looking for the paintbrushes. :artist: Thanks!!!

She had a flashlight because for video to be seen, you need a "frame of reference" in a mostly dark screen (like the light).
The other way would have been to bring in video lights and that would have spoiled the effect.

So, no flashlights are available for guests, but its only VERY dark in small sections of the cave.
There are electric "lanterns" mounted on the walls that provide enough light to see most places.
It seems particularly dark if you come in from direct sunlight (and most times you DO), but if you'll let your eyes get accoustomed to the lower light levels, the caves are bright enough to find your way.

AFAIK, the paint brushes are still "sitting around" to be "found".

My kids love the caves. It's a lot of fun to explore them. We love going over to TSI and sitting down for a cup of lemondade.

TSI is great in the cooler months. I don't believe there's much AC or indoor places. But the bridges are soo much fun! Especially the barrel bridge! I wait until my whole family is on the bridge, then jump around a lot and watch them almost lose their balance! Evil, I know, but we all get a good laugh out of it.

In the caves, watch out for mischievious little kids too!! There was one, and he kept jumping out from around the corners and all those little spaces that kids can always squeeze themselves into and scaring me. He got me a few times in the beginning! :teeth:

That was little ol' ME...

BOO !

;)

I got lost once very briefly because of those caves at Disneyland! I was about 8 years old at the time and told my mom that I wanted to go into one of the caves. I took 2 or 3 steps in, but then I got too scared and backed out. I freaked when my mom and sis weren't standing where I'd left them! After sobbing to a CM that I couldn't find them, I spotted them not far away. It turned out that they had gone to the other side of the cave to meet me and didn't know I had turned around.

YUCK! I am one of those people who simply cannot breathe in enclosed spaces so, NO I DO NOT LIKE the caves! I love to watch t.v. shows on them, read books about them, listen to people talk about them, watch my kids roam through them....but can't go IN them! :bitelip: I can't breathe in a small BATHROOM for heavens sake! :rotfl2: For you out there who enjoy them....HAVE FUN for me! Helen

Caves? CAVES? Where the heck are the caves?
We went to TSI on our last WDW trip for the first time- we didn't see any caves. :confused3

It would not be Tom Saywer (the Island, the Movie, the Play, or the BOOK) without a cave or two.

Heck, Walt Disney spent much of his youth in Missouri, and there are some amazing caves in Mo (Mark Twain's hometown of Hannibal is, of course, in Mo)... so you just know Walt would put a cave (or two, or three) at an attraction he called Tom Saywer Island.

At MK, there are 3 underground areas.

A "cave".
A "mine".
An "escape tunnel".

Part of the fun of exploring TSI is finding the "wonders" that are there. :thumbsup2

May I say thank you for this thread! I've always wondered about the island, but never went to see it. Since we are going in Dec, do you suggest this for a couple w/out kids? :hmghost:

My wife and I are usually the only ones in our party at WDW.

SURE!

I found some exterior shots here:

Scroll down. The "Escape Tunnel" from the fort is actually one of the three underground "caves" on TSI.

You see photos of the signs for Injun Joe's Cave and Old Scratch's Mystery Mine (the other 2 caves).

Here's another image:

I'll keep looking, but a photo INSIDE a cave would be a bit DARK. :goodvibes
