Hi,
Have just recivied a letter from Dollar car rental informing me of two supposed toll violations in October.

They occured within 4 minutes of each other, one was for 25c the other for 75c,added to that is a $50 admin fee.

There is no way I would have passed through without paying although the impossiable part for me is proving it.

Has anyone had any experiance of this or any ideas of how to contest it.!!

This has never happened to us as such, but we did mistakenly drive through one without paying (Aug 2007) and mentioned it at the next toll and they told us not to worry as it is a "residents" tax and a rental car would never be chased! Times have changed or someone at Dollar is trying it on, I would definitely write a letter and perhaps contest who was actually renting that car at that time?

I would write, or email. Chances are they wouldn't bother chasing you if you dug your heels in. Do you have any tickets or photos with date and times on the data that could prove you were elsewhere at the time? I must admit I'd be hard pushed to tell you the licence plate numbers of any of the cars we've rented even while i was driving them, never mind two months later.

I don't recall tolls being that close together, so definitely ask for more info such as where and the exact times. Not heard of 25c tolls in the main Orlando area either.

Claire ;)

Definitely contact Dollar and ask for exact times and places.

Then it may be helpful to contact the Expressway Authority www.expresswayauthority.com/Corporate/ and the phone is Toll Enforcement Office at 407-690-5200.

I had to contact them last year as despite putting money in the unmanned toll at the Osceola Parkway exit of the 417 the 'thanks for paying' light didn't come on and I was worried I'd get a violation. (They were very helpful and said that if I had paid the camera would have seen it and so no problem.)

Good luck. :goodvibes

I had a letter from Dollar for the same thing, only it was 2 x 75c not paid. They had already charged it to my CC. there is no way i do not pay at tolls, and to have missed 2, i doubt it. But like yourself have no way to prove i did pay, seems i have read quite a few of these this year where dollar are charging for unpaid tolls.Never bothered chasing it up, was about £30, and not worth the hassle, just put it down to experience, and keep a check in future on all tolls i go through in future ,with times and dates.
Car booked with Budget next year.

Sounds a bit suspect. I would ask Dollar for the violation notification they have received as proof. Good luck.

my dad went through one this year and the person on the toll said you are allowed to go through 1 a month without it being a problem. I know we are always worried with the non manned ones.

The worst ones are the 25c ones i think as its such a small amount

We went through one last year without paying (I thought I had the correct money then realised I had Euro cents not Dollar cents) but nothing ever came of it.

I would chase this up with them, as it does not sound correct. Let us all know how you get on.

We went through the 25c one back in 2004 as it was unmanned and we didn't have the change. I was so worried about it that I thought we would be turned away at the airport immigration the following year.
Thankfully we weren't and we heard nothing after.

Exactly the same thing happened to my brother in law - he got a letter a couple of weeks ago saying he hadn't paid a toll in October and he was pretty sure it was wrong as the date was when we had been at Discovery Cove all day. His credit card had expired so the amount owed had gone up. He rang the police in Florida direct and they were able to pull up the information on the car's registration number as well as a photo - when that came up the person on the other end of the phone did laugh and say that my middle-aged BIL didn't sound like he was a young guy who would wear his baseball cap back to front, which was what the photo showed! My BIL has now gone back to the car rental people with all the info.

So had someone been using you BILs hire car while he was in DC? Or was the photo taken of a different car? OMG this is worrying - maybe it's not the rental company that's getting it's facts wrong - oh well one more thing to fret about for next year's holiday.

I hope everything gets sorted out for you.

we also went through,an unmanned one,as we had no change.i have never been so worried,in all my life!
when we reached the next one,it was manned,so we explained, what had happened & asked him to take, for that toll as well.he just laughed & told us not to worry, but i certainly did!
tracy

I'd definitely check with Dollar as they may indeed be trying it on. That's the only problem when you hand over your CC it's too easy for them to charge for missed tolls or gas!

We had to pass through a toll booth as it simply wouldn't work. Mentioned it at Dollar and they just laughed it off.

Hmmm. I wonder if Dollar think that we're easier targets to attach these violations to as we are in the UK and they have our credit card numbers? Perhaps they received the toll violation alerts, looked at who else had rented the vehicle in that month and did it that way. Maybe they are counting on the fact that most people probably don't know where they were on what day (unless you do a TR on Dis!) and with you being so far away won't contest it.

Interesting...

Next time, suggest you get a rental car with plate pass - taht way you are charged for each toll and you avoid violations. Budget and Dollar both have plate pass on all their rental cars out of MCO.

What is plate pass? Is it the Sun Pass lanes for the toll booths? We are never offered it, can you ask for it to be attached to your car for the duration of your rental?
