Tokyo in Dec/Jan!

We are finally getting to realise our dream, which is similar to others...to visit Tokyo Disney! It's the only Disney we have not yet visited, so are very excited.
We have a limited budget, so stopping in Tokyo itself rather than TDR. We caught non stop British Airways flights to Yokyo for £550 pp so consider we have got lucky. Exchange rate is of course very much against us, but by following all the great tips and trip reports that have been posted here, that I gave spent past few days avidly reading lol....I think we will be ok.

Does anyone have any advice re when to visit parks on what days? Given that we are inTokyo from 27th Dec until Jan 8th? I understand much of Tokyo shuts down over NY so we have to plan carefully. Any one able to offer any advice?

Any recommendations for New Year? DH wants to try for Disney for new years eve but I am thinking it will be full to capacity with those staying on site etc quite early..and totally rammed anyway? Would it be worth an extra park day just for the experience of being there? I am planning 4 day tickets, but could push to an extra day if worth while.

I am anticipating the worst in terms of cold weather, long lines, and a public holiday shut down, so hope to negotiate a way through it all and still have a great time

Any tips or ideas welcomed!

If you're not keen on going on NYE itself why not go toward the end of your trip? Everyone should be back to work by Jan. 4, if I remember correctly.

Also, I don't think you need five days there in any case. Two is good, three is plenty four is a luxury -- just a suggestion, but maybe see a little more of Japan or at least Tokyo instead of traveling to the other side of the planet and spending it in a theme park. Just my opinion.

One more tip: I believe the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay at Haunted Mansion is usually in place for a week or two in January... try to find out when it's in place and make sure you see it before they close the attraction to take it down, it's fantastic.

I don't recall how long it was still in place in past years, but this is bad advice for 2012. The Haunted Mansion is closed to remove the overlay starting on January 5. See http://www.tokyodisneyresort.co.jp/en/schedule/stop/index.html.

In any case, OP, it looks like you can see the Nightmare stuff if you do so on or before the 4th.

I think my original post was around what would be the best thing or place to go for NY's eve in Tokyo. If we do choose to go to Disney, I reckon we will pretty well achieve little (lines lines lines), except for the fact we can say we were actually there for the NY. In other words, i would not count it as a full park day in terms of ticking off rides and shows.

I suggest spending NYE at one of the major shrines in Tokyo such as Sensoji. It'll be crowded, but it will also be a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience. Alternatively, if you want the more modern, youthful and energetic experience, take it in from my old haunting grounds in Shibuya.

Both parks are only open until 6pm on the 31st according to the TDR site, so definitely count that out for NYE, I agree with the above poster, Shibuya!

Not sure about that, I think the board out the front tonight said 12.30, I could be wrong though as I only glanced at it but it was def about NYE.

They are open all night for NYE. They always are and will be these year. Both parks will open for NYE at 8 p.m. and remain open until 6 a.m.
