I think my mind has taken a vacation to Disney and I can't think of a thing to buy a friend for her 49th birthday. She wanted a small party and said no presents, but really I want to get her something anyway. Our budget is tight, but I'm sure somebody here will have a great suggestion!
Thanks in advance.

Perhaps you could buy her a $10 Starbucks card and put it in a birthday card to her saying the Starbucks card is for her to take you out one morning for coffee and conversation. ;)

If she has a fave charity or cause, you could make a small donation in her name.

I vote for a flowering plant for the yard, maybe a hydrangea. Then it will flower every year for her. :hippie:

The Carrie Diaries (book) with gift card to local movie theatre for the new S e x and the City movie coming out. :-D

I wanted to do this for my bestie but was in a rush and Target didn't have the book so got her the new Hungry Girl cookbook.

One year a friend gave me a flower pot with a piece of styrofoam in it, with 35 suckers arranged in it like a flower bouquet. She had painted on the side of the pot, "35 S U C K S". It was a "sweet" idea.

Take her to lunch. I am going to be your friends age this year and I love going out to lunch with my friends. This year my birthday fell on the first day of school so a bunch of ladies from my church got together and went out for lunch. It was a very special day for me.

TJ Maxx has great jewelry that isn't very expensive. For $15 you can get a nice pair of sterling silver earrings or a necklace or bracelet. I've gotten beautiful things there that look like they cost much more. They also have a really nice array of pretty colored scarves that would make a nice gift too. As a matter of fact, TJ Maxx has tons of nice stuff under $20. I can always find a gift there.

Make her a friend coupon book. You can put in one "coupon" for a lunch date. One coupon for "free pass to call me in the middle of the night". How about one coupon for "one ride to the airport". Or one coupon for "I will tell you the truth no matter what" (kind of thinking - does this dress look good on me?) Or whatever things your friend might like. Its not really a gift in that you didn't spend money on it, but it still is a way to show you care about her.

These are great ideas! I think I'll combine a couple of them for an inexpensive but thoughtful gift. Thanks :).

What about an inexpensive (ok cheap) bottle of wine? If she drinks wine I know of some good sweet ones that are under $10 a bottle, in fact Barefoot makes some of my faves and they are all about $5 a bottle, I have some white zin in my fridge right now and it's honestly calling my name. LOL

$10 or $15 gift crd to Barnes and Noble. i love those and we all know if we have kids-book money goes to them.
