toilet trouble

DW and I just got back from a wonderful seven days at BC. I keep puzzling over wether we will ever have any type of a trip where the bathroom works just right for us.

We had a great room right off of the loby and just down the hall from the store where I could get a.m. coffee. The auto door was great once the activated it for us. It is soooo nice not to have to struggle with holding a door and pushing a chair. Roll in shower was great as was the hand held adjustable head. Only problem was the toilet.

The toilet wasn't high enough and the grab bar was on the wrong side for us. We called to get a riser. They brought a bedside comode with no seat! That helped alot. We called again but they didn't understand. Finally I sallied forth through the loby with beside comode in hand. What eventually got action was saying, "if someone tried to sit on this thing it could result in a very serious injury." They fixed it! One realizes that our needs vary greatly one from another. What works for us doesn't always work for others.

It was a wonderful trip. We have decided that we are going to add our riser to the list of things we always take no matter what.

I just got back yesterday too from a 7 day stay at BC. I am SO SORRY that I missed this scene.:)

I was the lady on an ECV that looked like a bag lady. The airlines lost my luggage (never found it) so I was wearing pathetic clothes that I found on the Walmart clearance racks. I have no problem buying clothes at Walmart, but by the time it makes it to the clearance racks it is pretty picked over.

I even had a tshirt that said "Grad Night 2006". Several CMs asked me if I had been there (I am 60!). I told them no, I bought it for $2.99 at the Disney Outlet store. Cheap was the deciding factor.

I still had a great time and renting the ECV made it all possible.

I'm just back from Boardwalk. No auto door to the room and door closer too strong. During my stay I managed to scratch the room door up real bad and break off most of the trim getting in every day. Engineering fixed it up half way through stay, but it was just as bad again by the time I left.

The grab bars in my room were also the wrong side for me and the sink made parking my chair next to the toilet impossible. (ended up sitting on the toilet sideways throughout my trip)The toilet seat was too low to make an easy side transfer. Last year (same room) housekeeping had trouble finding a suitable riser so this year I brought my own - a two inch plus a four inch. On checking out I left them behind to save lugage space. I told the manager I was donating them for the benefit of other disabled guests, but he said there was no call for them, that I was the only person that had ever requested one!!!!

Bed was too high for me to get in and out of safely, so engineering removed the plinth and put the sprung base direct on the floor making the bed four inches lower. They also fitted my own bed rail that I had brought with me. (a little one that us use to push myself upright when getting out of bed.

One of the problems I can see is that a room that is 'just right' for one person is 'just wrong' for someone else.
And since Special Services doesn't seem to have any real useful information about room configuration, if you have specific needs there is no way to find out whether the room assigned to you will meet your needs or not (like the toilet being on the right of the parked wheelchair).

Andrew!! You made it on your trip!!?? How did the airport thing go?? I know there was some concern when they first started the new security rules that you wouldn't be able to take your power chair through security??

I hope everything went well!!

Iwill keep this short as it is completely off topic for this thread. I had no problems whatsoever getting through security with my electric wheelchair in London because security measures were relaxed about ten days before my departure and there was no longer a requirement to transfer to an airport wheelchair to go through security.

When I have caught up with all the mail that piled up on my desk whilst I was away, I will write a trip report. I am not quite sure yet where to post it (Trip Reports?) Some of it relates to Food & Wine (Restaurants?), some of it disabled access to F&W events (here?) Access through MCO (Transportation?) or just where all my friends hang out (here?).

Instead of writing directly onto a forum, do the trip report on a word processor. Then you can copy and paste the entire report onto the Trip Reports forum as well as specialized parts onto the applicable (such as Restaurants or Transportation) forums.

Just be aware that you must wait at least 60 seconds between posts.

Good idea. I have done that (I am behind in trip reports though).
