Help me out. I'm a semi-newbie, this is only our 2nd trip to WDW. This year we will be ending our trip on my son's 3rd birthday (first week of December).

I'd like to do a cake for him at some point. I'm trying to brainstorm options now, can you help? Are there resturants that make birthdays special, is there somewhere we must go, etc?

Also, besides the birthday button, what uniquely Disney things can we try to include for this special birthday trip?

I mean, our middle child had her 3rd birthday at Disney. It was her 1st trip. That was special enough, I didn't really think she needed anything else. She did get a birthday pin though and was thrilled with that. (She will be 10 next month).

I think I remember a cupcake vending machine is somewhere on property? I'm not wanting to spend a fortune on a cake add on to one of our dining reservations but I'm not sure what else could suffice. I'd like to sing him happy birthday at some point even if it's just in the hotel room.

I think it really depends. We did our twins' birthday at Captain's Grill two years in a row and I special ordered cakes for there. The first year was AMAZING! They set-up the cakes with balloons/confetti and stuff and made it very special. The second year was a huge disappointment, the waitress pretty much threw the cakes on the table and just seemed like she couldn't be bothered (everything was a disappointment that year, including the food, and we haven't been back). The cakes did come out very nice but they were VERY expensive.

I was just reading about the celebration cakes. We are gluten free :( I don't imagine they can accommodate. I'll probably have to special order from Erin McKenna's in Disney Springs: https://www.erinmckennasbakery.com/orlando/

I took my DD to WDW for her 1st birthday, the first of many trips. We ordered a cake from the resort Bakery. I know in the past that Disney has been very accommodating to persons with allergies. I recommend that you contact Disney and ask about gluten free options. I think you'll find that they will be able to meet your needs. As for Special Birthday treats. When you book your ADR for the restaurant of choice, please be sure to note in the special occasions that you are celebrating a little one's birthday. That's a sure way to get some Pixe Dust sprinkled on your table. Good Luck and have a fabulous vaca with your Little one!

I second this. We noted that one trip we took was for my son's birthday, and were surprised at each table service meal with a table full of pixie dust and a special cupcake. Our maid also left him balloons and a card on the bed one night.

That reminds me, when you book your Disney Resort stay make sure to note in Celebrations that you are there to celebrate a birthday.

Agreed! When we took DD1 for her 3rd birthday, crystal palace gave her a cupcake with a candle for her birthday (for 8am breakfast, ouch!!!) but also a card signed by all the characters. She loved it.

Over the years, we have ordered three cakes at Disney. One for my birthday, one for my mom's birthday, and one for my nephew's birthday. They were all delicious but crazy expensive and seemed to increase dramatically in cost each year. They are specialty cakes so I'm sure they could accommodate allergies. For my birthday, we did California Grill, for my mom's we had dinner at Grand Floridan Cafe, and for my nephew's we had dinner at CRT. All the restaurants did a fabulous job. I'm sure most places would be fun.

As for special activities, have you considered Pirates League if he is into pirates. My oldest did that last year and loved it.

Thanks for all the ideas (and non-judgmental responses). The little guy is our youngest and our only boy so I'm just paranoid about not making it special enough. I'm sure he wont know the difference though.

His big sisters get all the princess fun at Disney and they get to ride all the rides while he waits... you know typical younger kid troubles. I just worry too much I guess.

@LinaNate Erin's McKenna is actually really good cake! Their 6 inch cost me 45 and they can do different coors and flavors. The only thing they can't do sadly is Disney characters :(. The cake was a little dense by moist and tasty. You can either go to the bakery or they can deliver to restaurants (and possibly rooms) on property.
