My parents put the 3 of us thru private catholic schools for 12 yrs. on my dad's state worker's salary (not a high paying job).
We did take vacations as a family and I never felt like we were lacking anything.
My parents paid for school thru HS then we were on our own for college. We could apply anywhere we wanted and sign up for any student loans or scholarships we wanted. But we were all responsible for our financing. My brothers went to 4 yr schools (one on a scholarship) and I went to a 1 yr business school.
My DD is 4 and although I've saved a bit for her future education, I'm putting her thru private school until HS then she will be on her own for college. She can get a scholarship or loan or job but I'm not one of those parents who save to put her child thru college. Being responsible for our future post-HS gave us the incentive to do well and get paying jobs after graduation. I know of many kids who went to college on their parents' nickel and blew it all on partying.
Plus when my DD is ready for college I'll be heading to retirement. I'm a single mom struggling to stretch a dollar. Believe me she will know how to handle finances once she learns how to add and subtract. She's already learning that she can't always have everything she wants (a new toy or dinner out every nite).
