on a diabetic diet. I am sorry I stressed so at the beginning. BUT having this told to me about being on the border of having Diabetes shook me up. I am being good and measuring everything and eating what I am told. I am sorry to say this but . I was not required to lose weight. I am the right size BMI according to the doctors office. but I lost four pounds already. I did cry alot last week. Not having ALL THE CARBS I am used to was like losing my friends. The Dietician asked me how big a plate of spaghetti did I have and I said THIS BIG.....and made my hands as big as my plates are. She laughed and said very cute mind ya.......but she looked and said. SO instead you have a large salad and a veggie if you want and then one cup of pasta and a half cup of sauce. I truly did not think I could do this. BUT I DID..........cried at first but I was okey with it........I do not want to have diabetes full blown and I will obey the rules and regulations of a diet that I need to follow.....
So week one is almost done and I will survive. :cool1:

Hi there,

 Congratulations on making it through your first week. It will get easier and you will start to enjoy eating healthy foods. Your body will start craving the good stuff the more you get the bad stuff out of your diet. Keep with it, the rewards of a healthy body are so worth it.

Pumba, I'm there with you. I received the "borderline diabetic" phone call from my dr. at the end of April and life has changed for me, too. No official need to lose weight (yet) she said, but I need to eliminate the sweets and watch the carbs. Now the sweets I haven't had too hard a time with, but the carbs? Well, it sounds like we both have a love affair with them! I totally relate to your plate of spaghetti! :p

I know, though, that those of us with this problem have the strength to deal with the nutritional structures imposed on us. We HAVE to manage what we eat. Period. The alternative is too devastating. Is there diabetes in your family? My dad died of the complications of diabetes (renal failure), and as I watched him, I knew that if and when my time came, I'd fight it--if for no other reason than to say he didn't die in vain.

Geesh, that sounds pretty heavy for the WISH, but making changes IS heavy stuff, and you, pumba, are doing it! Take it day by day and soon you'll be able to know when you can have the occasional carb without it wreaking havoc on your blood sugar. YOU CAN DO THIS!

Erin

Hello, I must say you CAN do it! Please follow thru because it can make all the difference! I should tell you that my father just passed away from diabetes (April 2, 2005) that he actually knew about for 18yrs. He chose to do nothing about it maybe because he didn't realize what the outcome would be but for whatever reason he didn't take care of himself. He didn't eat right and didn't go to the doctor. Well, he did go to the doc 18 yrs ago and found out then he had type 2 diabetes and that he should start controlling his diet now! Unfortunatly, it went down hill during the last 3 yrs. It started with his heart making the blood pressure go up because after all, the kidneys play a large roll in the blood pressure and all the vessels in his eyes burst. He basically was blind at 50yrs old. He had 4 surgeries in each eye but it still didn't fix them. Then after that things went downhill and be had to do dialysis for 3 days a week at 6hrs a day because his kidney functions were not working to filter out the blood! It was an awful thing to have to go thru! He would have a line put in and replaced every other week in order to access atery to do the dialysis which would regularly clot or get infected. It was heartbreaking to see him in ICU in his last day. He died at 53! Please, you can do it! Look at how quickly it took his life because he didn't make changes! He realized things too late and he couldn't get a transplant because his body was basically too far gone for a lack of better words. He was a work a holic and always said he would retire at 50-well he did alright and it was not a pretty site!
Take charge of your diet! Once you get the hang of it you will feel better and be so proud of yourself! Good luck and let me know how you are :)

You brought tears to my eyes and I feel like I have become ONE WITH YOU.......Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragment. IT means so much to me. How many carbs are you allowed per meal? and Do you do any finger testing yet. I have to go to another office (diabetic control) and learn how to do this and read them.
Thanks again

No, Pumba, I don't have the carb count yet or the finger sticking. . .just some vague and general instructions: no sweets/good carbs only for three months and then we'll retest. My potassium level was above normal also, so I'm having that retested on Monday.

Hookedondizney, your story brought tears to my eyes and gave me a chill. My father was a workaholic, too, and was going to do so much when he retired at 63. He ended up having quadruple bypass and valve replacement surgery and recovery and then the kidney failure a couple of years later. He spent his last year on dialysis and died at 68. He DID try to manage his diabetes with insulin and diet (occasionally with his diet), but he pushed himself SO hard that it just took an incredible toll on him. His "retirement" was spent with my mom as the primary caregiver, and she has lived the last 12.5 years without the love of her life.

So, Pumba, ya gotta do this. You've got to care enough about yourself and the others in your life to be good to yourself and follow the plan you've been given one day at a time. Do you have an exercise plan you're going to follow? How many carbs are you allowed? When's your appointment at diabetic control? I know it may not feel this way, but you're lucky to have been diagnosed before it was hugely out of control. YOU'RE the one who's going to be the boss now--not your diabetes. :)

Take care,
Erin

Hang in there and know I'll probably be with you in a gew years. My father wa sdiagnosed at 60. Well, he's 67 now and doing really well. He has not had to go to insulin because he has been so good with his diet and exercise. I'm so proud of him an dglad that he is disciplined enough to eat right.

I have low blood sugar like he did prior to being diabetic and many other similarities. I just know I'll get that call one day too. Thank you for reminding me that if I get on teh right track again and eat sensibly now, I may not have to do anything drastic in the future. Way to go on makin git thorugh your first week!

Hookedondisney - Thanks for your story. I'm so sorry that you had to go through this. I have a co-worker who will do really well fo ra while and tehn go off the wagon for a lon gtime. I think I'll have him read about your father next time he heads down the wrong path. Hopefully, his little girl (who;s only 9) won't have to go through what you did.

PUMBA how is it going? Please let me know, I am thinking of you! Remember.....I CAN DO IT, I CAN DO IT, I CAN DO IT!!!

Pumba - You may want to try Dreamfields pasta. It tastes just liuke regular but has less digestable carbs. My dad has checked his blood after eating and it really is much better than regular pasta. It REALLY does taste the same, though!

yesterday I had to go to a funeral four hours away and by the time we got to the funeral parlor for the visit we were LATE. SO we ran there and had supper at one of our cousins house. Naturally because she was feeding she did not know how many, the meal consisted of spaghetti, salad, and italian bread and some sandwiches which I COULD OF EATEN ALL. Grinders. OH MY GOODNESS....BUt I was good last night, had a cup of pasta and three meatballs and a little salad. NOT ONE PIECE OF BREAD. But had a bite of the grinder because I have not had one in YEARS. This morning the hotel had a continental breakfast and I just had the two slices of toast with grape jelly and three coffees to Wake me up and a glass of OJ. The family had a gathering at a hall for all the relatives after the funeral and this is where I BLOW IT.
potato salad, macaroni and sauce, beans, and finger rolls. SO I had a tablespoon of potato salad, a table spoon of macaroni, and two finger rolls........I WAS STARVING. I think I would add another 30 carbs also another two coffees. Nothing like getting four hours of sleep in a strange bed. We got home a little while ago and I didnt' feel like eating....so I had a four of a cup of cottage cheese and five lo fat ritz crackers.......Oh well...off to bed EARLY
Thanks again for asking and keeping track of me.....I truly appreciate it

Is it getting easier, Pum? Wilgus doesn't eat flour or sugar anymore. It helps him control his blood sugar.
