On August 7, 1942, U.S. forces landed at Guadalcanal, marking the start of the first major allied offensive in the Pacific during World War II.

On August 7, 1964, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, giving President Johnson broad powers to deal with reported North Vietnamese attacks on U.S. forces.

On August 7, 1974, French stuntman Philippe Petit walked a tightrope strung between the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center.

On August 7, 1998, terrorist bombs exploded at the U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killing 224 people - including 12 Americans - and injuring more than 5,500.

And with that, I turn the History posts over to the capable keyboard of ILUVDXL, who has kindly offered to fill in for me.
We'll be driving to Indiana tomorrow, then heading to Florida on Friday, where we'll be on the DISNEY MAGIC for a 7-day Eastern Carribean cruise next week.

Take care, everyone! I'll be back on August 19!! And fill me in if anything exciting or controversial (!) happens around here, OK?
;) ;)

Bet you didn't know, when you posted this, that Philippe was a funambilist.

I will do my best to fill your shoes while you're gone. Have a wonderful time. You'll be missed.
