Today I love the IRS

Wow at this thread. First of all, yes I qualify for EIC. Do I think of it as a glorified welfare check? Absoutely not! Next year (hopefully) I won't qualify for it. You konw why I say hopefully? Well, b/c that means that I'll be earning more money than I ever have before and won't qualify for that glorifed welfare check. DD and never want/need for anything. I don't pay into the prepaid college thing but I do contribute to her savings account every month. I feed, clothe, and provide the necessities for both of us all year plus occasionally do a WDW vacation every other year and probably blow more than I should on luxuries. Am I a bum for getting and spending that money that the government gives me? No, I'm not. And this time next year I won't be getting it. Am I mad? Nope, it just means I'm doing better for myself and that's better than any $1303 in "Free Money" I'll get from the feds.

I agree that some people abuse the system, but you know what? Someone will always figure out to abuse any system. And believe it or not, I'm not in favor of getting back more than I paid in anyway. But thats the way it is. It has its flaws and needs to be fixed but don't chastize those that are responsible (for the most part) with their money all year long for receiving money that the government thinks we are entitled to (whether its right or wrong). This is a problem with our tax laws and government, not with me, mudnuri, or anyone else on here that happens to receive it.

Now how would you all like your $1303 back? Shall I mail you a check?

:grouphug: Great post!

Why are people assuming that everyone that qualifies for the EIC only works a little? I work full time year-round, bust my butt working and will qualify for EIC now because I am a single mother with 2 children.

I don't see where people stated that everyone who qualifies for EIC barely works. I know I posted about people *I* know personally who take advantage of the EIC system, blow the refund on luxuries, and then complain they aren't receiving enough gov't assistance to pay their rent costs, heating and grocery bills. I don't understand why people here are acting like it's a personal affront when people are outraged about this. If anything those abusing the system are taking from those who genuinely need the assistance.

As an aside however, I do not fault anyone who takes advantage of it. It's not the person filing that put the system in place.

ITA :) Every taxpayer should take advantage of any credit or deduction that applies to them. I may not agree with some of them, but as long as they're out there, people should certainly use them. :)

People are so quick to judge.

How do we know she doesn't already put $ away for her children's educaton?

DH and myself put $ away for our kids, invest and plan for a rainy day. Is there something wrong with going out and buying a nice computer or a tv or something for ourselves with our refund?

So, everyone who disagrees with her decision, do you have all of your credit cards paid off? Most of you have Disney trips in your signatures or pictures of the DVC you own. Are you sure you shouldn't have invested that $ instead?

:rolleyes2

Fair point.

I do have all of my credit cards paid off. And, yes, I should have invested that $ instead of buying DVC.

Exactly. It would be nice if folks limited the complaints to things people actually posted.

I'm all for lending a helping hand.....even if it's more than one pays in. But the OP started the thread with.....

muhahahahahhahahahahahah

LCD tv, sectional couch, new stereo for the Passat...........

which sounds decidedly that she's mocking the very system that affords her these luxuries. Or mocking us because the system affords her these luxuries.

I guess it's all in perception. OP, it would be nice if you clarified.

When the responses come in, please share them with me.. Last year I received an EIC somewhere in the area of $16 I think (too lazy to look it up right now) and one particular poster on these boards had an absolute cow about it and gleefully did her best to degrade and humiliate me for it.. Funny part about the whole thing is that I never even knew I qualified for it, so sure as heck wasn't looking for it or trying to scheme a way to get it..

Some people have waaaaaaay too much time on their hands to nit pick and humiliate other people when they don't even have all of the facts... Quite frankly, I pity them..

So for any of you who feel soooooo taken advantage of, I have $16 sitting here waiting for you... However, based on your own line of thinking about "paying your own way", I will expect you to send me a postage-paid self-addressed envelope.... :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Sorry, but you'll have to pay up front for the money order yourself.. And don't forget - this $16 has to be split among the millions of taxpayers who were "cheated" out of their fair share of the $16... :rotfl2:

Maybe I stated that wrong, but people are jumping on the OP for what she's spending her money on. I agree with your point...if you can't pay your rent or your grocery bills, you shouldn't spend the money on frivolous things. But people are jumping on the OP. Has she complained she can't pay for her necessities? She is getting that money back regardless. The government says she is entitled to it. She didn't ask for it. If her bills are paid, why can't she spend it on whatever she wants?

Whoever said that money is a glorified welfare check...oh please. I bust my freakin' butt all year long and I receive the EIC. So you equate me with being on welfare???? I WORK FULL TIME and I do NOT receive any other assistance!!!! I pay my rent on my own, I pay my heat on my own, my groceries and every other bill I have. How can you even compare?

A glorified Welfare check???? Are you KIDDING me??

I would much rather make enough money all year long to support my children better actually...

What about people in the military? You know, those guys that are protecting our country day in and day out; the ones that never see their families because they work 16 hour days? Do they deserve EIC or should I just go to the welfare office right now?

My DH has been in the Army for 11 years and we STILL get EIC because his annual salary is barely over $31,000 and no, that isn't a typo.

So, how would you guys who don't like EIC like "YOUR" money back or should I just tell DH he can repay you buy continuing to serve his country?

I really don't think she was mocking anyone. I think she was just excited because she got her money.

You may be correct but it was the "muhahahahahhahahahahahah" that made me take notice. I've only ever seen or heard that sound laced with sarcastic/sardonic overtones.

If someone who makes $30,ish and can pay their bills and buy food and provide necessities than that's great! If they want to spend their refund on fun things and it doesn't impact day to day living, then great to that too.

However, I think if you are living with someone who is sharing all those expnses with you but you still get to claim little income and qualify for EIC than I say shame on them.

Lets say a person makes $30,000 and qualifies. Their live-in SO makes $30,000. Now it is a household of $60,000., yet they get "extra" from the government because on paper they only make $30,000.

That is not fair to me and that is where I have a problem with the EIC

NOBODY should get back more in taxes than they paid in.

That's why I take every deduction possible to ensure the feds get none of my dough. We subsize too many people-here and around the world.

Yes, oh shame on us for helping those in need.
And - yes, I do know SOME people cheat the system...but MANY do not.

and everyone plays by the rules and never re-uses their refillable mug!

yes and no one pool hops, sneaks extra kids in their room, brings a toaster, iron to grill cheese sandwhiches, a hot plate and all that stuff
LOL ....

How the OP choses to spend her refund is her business. The post is not to rub it in everyone heres face it just shows excitment. No one knows her situation so there is no need to judge. The government says that the money is owed to her. She's buying some things for her house so what I would also buy a plasma tv if I was getting more than just a 1000 back. Sure the government is screwed up any way you look at it and some things aren't fair to some people but who really cares. Do you think it's fair to pay people 400 dollars a week unemployment for six months, while the rest of us need to go to work everyday and they get to stay home and apply for one job a week to keep their unemployment. Is it also fair that I have a friend who him and his girlfriend make about 70,000 dollars a year but they are on welfare and food stamps because she has five kids and no child support. The earned income credit is their so people can claim it sure it's not fair but then what in live really is. When I was working part time and going to college I got to claim it it saved me from owing money. It helps those people that need it.
