To the CM's on the board: what is the one "tip" you can give us?

I always like to focus on "how things work" at WDW. Everything we do is done on a grand scale, so here are some tid bits, which can help you understand why things don't always go according to plan. These are based on WDW transportation:

1. The buses do not simply shuttle point A to point B. A bus will pick up guests at PoP century and take them to DHS. While approaching DHS, the bus driver contacts dispatch and dispatch advises what the next destination will be. Therefore, the bus carrying pop century guests might pull into the POR slot at DHS and pick up guests there. Although it looks like everyone on that bus came from POR, they in fact came from POP Century.

Part of this system is computerized. Of course we all LOVE computers because they are never wrong and never cause a problem right? So when a computer messes up or a dispatcher doesn't have their head on straight, you end up waiting 40 minutes for a bus. It could also be that a bus has multiple stops scheduled and fills up on the first stop. Therefore another bus has to be dispatched to stop number 2, causing yet another delay.

I'll be completely honest, I HATE the buses. I have had quite a few bad experiences as a guest when using them and it's because of those experiences that I talked to a bus driver at work one day and asked about this.

2. All the boats operate on a shuttle cycle. If a boat is tied up and secured at a dock, but the gate/rope is closed, you're not getting on that boat, so don't waste energy running towards it.

3. This is a universal tip to anyone visiting WDW. Although you might think you're the center of the world, you're not. Waiting for 1 more person, can mean ticking off the other people on the boat or even worse, 120 people waiting on the dock at our destination(this can apply to rides, shows, etc). So even though you want us to wait for you, don't take it personally if we don't. Once we set in motion the "casting off" procedure, we are not going to stop it.

4. opening a gate on your own, jumping a gate, or ducking ropes are the quickest way to make sure you don't get on the next boat. I am not kidding, if I see another kid jump a closed gate thinking he will get on my boat, I will sssooo make him go to the back of the line.

I don't mean for this to be a negative post, but I want to stress that Disney transportation is MASS TRANSPORTATION! It's not quick, it will never be quick, so get over it. If you want to watch the fireworks, then don't be on the dock at 8:00 waiting for a boat and complain about it when you can't watch them. If you have a hoop de doo reservation at 9:30 don't be on the dock at 9:15 at MK and expect to get there on time and be mad when it takes longer.

There are multiple operational hazards we go through every night. That wonderful electrical water pageant effectively stops all water traffic from 9:25-9:32ish and from 10:15-10:20ish because it goes through the water bridge during that time. We can't dock when it's performing, we can't leave when it's performing, and we can't be within 150 ft of it at anytime.

When ferryboats come through the water bridge from dry dock, we have to wait. If the ferry is by the contemporary, it issues an all call to hold traffic. We then have to sit while it gets all the way through the bridge before proceeding.

When the water level is low(like it is now) we have 3 routes operating off 2 docks. That means someone is gonna be waiting for an open dock, which throws off our cycles.

These are all things we deal with on a consistent basis and I know every other aspect of WDW has the same issues to put up with. They are things that are 99% out of our control. Yet we do our best to be as efficient as possible. For me, understanding why things happen helps me calm down when I'm upset. That's the reason why, when I know a delay has been very long, as the captain I will get on the mic and offer any guest the opportunity to talk with me about the delay. Not everyone does this and in fact I might be the only one, but I strongly believe that education yields understanding.

Now, what can you do to help your expectations? Be nice to the CMs who are transporting you. I have seen this theme multiple times in this thread and it really is true.

So be nice to CMs, and be patient!!! I have had many guests be friendly to me and it really really helps my day. So to all of you who have done that, I sincerely say thank you. Sometimes it's that funny little comment about the "cows in the pen" at the ferryboat that can cheer me up and make me laugh. That's infectious and effects the rest of my day!

I have to say that we used the boats for the 1st time last year when we stayed at Ft Wilderness. So when planning a surprise girls weekend for my oldest daughter the first weekend in October you guys were the reason I chose the Wilderness Lodge so we could use the boats again. We LOVED using the boats to get to MK or to the Contemporary, and the Captians and crew were always so nice and friendly. It was my daughter's first time at MK last year for her 4th birthday and the Captain and Crew really started her special day off with a bang, I will never forget it. We look forward to seeing you guys again in just 50 days. :yay::woohoo::cheer2:

Loving the tips. When it's too hot at MK, ride tomorrowland transit authority. It's nearly always deserted and you get to sit down and cool off for a bit

This is also a great way to help a toddler desensitize for a minute. When my daughter who was 4 when we went last October got a bit over whelmed during the day we would just head to this ride and enjoy the AC. It was one of the best things that we did a MK and she loved it, so did my then 9 month old.

Whew...read it all over a few days.

The thread really just reminded me of what I already knew (use your best manners all the time), but I loved reading the stories of how people helped out. It has been a great reminder that while I am on my vacation and want my trip to be magical, I can make other peoples trip magical too. I can't wait for our vacation in September.

Ok, I have to ask, why always the left line? Curious minds want to know.

Allegedly, Americans always go right, as thats the side of the road they drive on. Brits always go left for the same reason. More Americans than Brits = busier queues on the right hand side.

I am loving all these tips! Now I'm not a CM (wish I was), but I do have some tips of my own and some reinforcement of other tips given.
1). Try to talk to the CMs in lines or just around the parks. Sometimes they're really fascinating people and sometimes they'll do something really nice for you. I remember about 10 years ago we were the first ones waiting for the riverboat at MK, so we started talking to the CM at the front of the line, Paul. Turns out that he was going to be the next captain of the boat, and he asked us to come up with him and drive it. It was really amazing and made our vacation that much more special.
2). Be kind and polite as much as you can. Disney is a stressful place and if you're yelling and screaming half the time, you will make is so much more stressful. Don't get bent out of shape just because they cut you off and made you wait for the next monorail or something (I've seen this happen and it's not pretty).
3). Sometimes, if there are a certain number of empty seats on a ride, they will call out for a party of that number from somewhere further back in the line. If you were going to request a certain spot or seat on the ride, don't take up their offer when they call out the number of people in your party. They will put you where those seats are.
4). If there is a certain seat or row on a ride car that you want, just ask politely for it. The CMs have always granted my request when I just ask politely.
5). I read before on this thread that someone said the left line is always shorter. This is not necessarily true. On some rides, people don't realize they can choose a side of the line, so they just follow the person in front of them. Pretty soon everybody is doing this and one side is much longer. You have to watch where the people are going and see which seems shorter. You can't just assume the left is. In past experiences, I have noticed that on POTC, the right side is usually much shorter.
6). I know this has been said earlier in the thread, but at QS counters and the bag check lines, there are 2 lines for each table, one for each side. Most people don't realize this and line up on one side, but the CM switches taking orders or checking bags on both sides. We can usually walk up to one side of a counter and order right away, while people on the other side wait a while.
7). At the turnstiles and QS restaurant lines, usually the lines at the very ends are shortest. Most people just walk up to the middle and wait in a line there without realizing that the end turnstiles/counters have no line at all. It's a lot like lemmings. Most people just follow the crowd.
8). At the attractions where they ask you to fill in all available space, do. You are in no way cutting the line and because most people don't listen to this, you will get in faster.
9). At shows in theaters, they make you scoot down to the end of the row. So if you wait a bit and let a few people go down a row before you, you will get a more central seat.
10). Waiting for parades/fireworks to start is boring, but necessary if you want a good spot. Send someone in your party to get snacks to bring back to your spot. Also, if this person really wants to sacrifice themselves, they can stay at the spot while everybody else rides some rides. They just have to be sure to spread backpacks/bags around to save the space. Also, if you walk up to the Hub in MK right before the fireworks, don't try to worm yourself in between groups that have been there. I have seen fights over this. If there is space, go ahead and take it, but don't stand so you're smashed into people who were already there. There have been times when I have been waiting for 2 hours for the fireworks and some group comes up 15 mins before they start and stands less than 6 inches in front of me, smashed against other people. Now I couldn't see because they were so tall and left so little buffer space in front of me to see. Nothing ruins a vacation like this, so don't ruin it for someone else. And if you're going to put a child on your shoulders for the fireworks/parade, inform the people behind you so they can stand back a bit to see over. Or if the person behind you is really short, ask to switch places with them.
11). If you have to choose between 2 rides that have relatively similar wait times, one to FP and one to wait Stand-by, look at the queue. FP the queue that is mostly outside (especially in summer) or looks more boring. For example, if you're trying to decide whether to FP Splash or Space Mountain, FP Splash because the queue is mostly outside and there are no games like Space. Now of course if one line is much longer than the other, FP that one. But now more and more rides are getting the more interactive queues that make waiting less boring. Try to FP the boring ones (Splash Mountain, BTMRR, Safari).
12). Go to WS when it opens at 11 and finish Future World later in the afternoon. The flow of people goes from Future World-WS as the day progresses. Most groups do everything in Future World before they get to WS. If you do WS when it opens, it will be almost empty. Then go back to Future World later when the crowds are moving towards WS.
13). If you get too exhausted during the day, leave the parks and go back to your resort and nap or swim or go to DTD (easier when you're at a Disney resort). Then go back to the parks later in the afternoon/evening. Sometimes when you're absolutely exhausted and miserable, it's not worth it being in the parks.
14). Water is free!!!!! You can go to any vendor or QS restaurant and get a cup of water for free and pour it into a water bottle. It tastes better than drinking fountains and is probably a lot more sanitary (thinking about those 'Grossest thing you've seen at Disney' thread horror stories :rotfl:)
Anyway, sorry for rambling on, but I hope these tips can help people enjoy their vacations more. I've seen most of my tips here on the boards before, so I know they work for more people than just me. Just remember the most important thing to do at Disney is have fun!!! (And eat some Dole Whip ;))

I have two big tips for you guys.

1. You never have to pay $2.50 for water. If you go to any counter service location (really anywhere that has fountain drinks), you can get a cup of ice water for free.

2. If you see something you like, buy it RIGHT THEN. You never know if you'll see one exactly like it / in that size / in that color ever again. Don't assume that World of Disney / Emporium / MouseGear is a such a giant store that it has everything. Because it doesn't.

Not only that, but there are drinking fountains ALL OVER THE PARKS. That water is really free and there are usually no lines at all for it. I don;t carry a bottle or anything with me now, I just head for the drinking fountains. :)

Oh please please please be careful about the drinking fountains.... I've caught people doing the most GRUESOME things in the drinking fountains.
Honestly... anywhere... I wouldn't use a drinking fountain....

We leave in the morning....and I brought Bobbles to fill up from the fountains in the parks.....what kind of GRUESOME things are you talking about????? :scared1:

Pay attention to your kids, don't let them wander under/past yellow lines on the floor or any ropes that are up. They're there for a very good reason. Yellow lines mark a dangerous area. That is something bad could happen and your kid could get severely hurt. Unless a cast member tells you to cross over, then don't. Doubly so with black and yellow lines, they mark fall offs. Pass one of those and you're getting wet.

Also don't let them play with the queue ropes, those ropes under go a lot of abuse and will snap or break. I've seen the metal clip sheer in half from the weight of a person. And please don't encourage them to cut underneath them, and don't do it yourself. If you or your bag or you kid gets caught up you can cause a pretty big mess.

I have a question. Do CM's enjoy when people come up and start conversations or do they get to the point where they wish people would leave them alone. LOL I can just imagine one of them saying "If one more person says they have family in my hometown....." I guess you have to enjoy people to do these jobs but it has to get tiring day in and day out.

I loved it. I had moved away from a town I loved to work at a place I loved and any reminder of home was welcome.
This then led into creating some SERIOUS magic for complete strangers who weren't expecting anything in return.;)

On the other hand... talking with random guests led to me reconnecting to people that I hadn't seen since I was a little girl... Like the postman who lived in my great grandmothers tiny village in Scotland and REMEMBERED me as the "Lassie with the braids from America." I mean really .. almost 20 years LATER we meet up like that.

2. If you see something you like, buy it RIGHT THEN. You never know if you'll see one exactly like it / in that size / in that color ever again. Don't assume that World of Disney / Emporium / MouseGear is a such a giant store that it has everything. Because it doesn't.

Not only that, but don't assume it'll still be there when you come back in a few days. I can attest to that firsthand - last week my kids wanted to do the fill-a-skull at the store when you exit POTC in MK, but it wasn't good timing. I told them we'd do it when we were back in MK in a few days. When we came back, they were out of the skullheads & the kids were disappointed. Luckily, 2 days later before going to the airport, we were back at MK & they had them back in stock. Learned my lesson on that one!

Although I am not a CM in the parks, I will say something that goes a long way, at least for me. If you happen to notice a CM's nametag, use their name. Say "Thank you, Joe." or "How's your day going, Annie?" I always do this because it seriously brightens my day when someone takes the extra second to use MY name.

Also, cut CMs a break! Almost every single one of us, in WDW or not, will do what we can for you. I don't work for this company for the paycheck; I work for them because I love it, I love what I do, and I love making magic! :)

Also, the ice cream tip from the first page - amazing! I will certainly be doing this when I go in October! :)

And remember the cast member names that are good to you and report them to Disney so the can be recognized for how amazing they are.

Be a good samaritan and do something nice for someone...give away a fast pass, let a child go first, etc. Last time I went a nice man gave up his seat at a parade for my son just to be nice. I payed it forward and gave away a bunch of FP tickets we hadn't used. While cast members are nice, crowds and heat make guests grumpy so it's prett amazing when something nice happens.

Large tour groups climbing on top of them and taking baths in them. I caught a parent holding their child up to use it as a bathroom.. . When I was in custodial on the CP, I've cleaned vomit and poo out of them... I've seen people use their entire mouths to drink from it... I've seen people spit on the mouth piece.
Basically, we cleaned them in the morning before the park opened up and maybe third shift got to them.. but unless something REALLY gross was on it.. it was only cleaned once a day. They were petri dishes......

Ultimately, what I saw as a custodian in HS... I would hate to see what some peoples homes were like.

Yuck! We always fill up our water bottles with the free cups of ice water from the cs places!:thumbsup2

This isn't a tip, but a question. How do I go about recognizing a CM for a job well done? We had a CM make our day and we want to say thank you.

Thanks.
