I need opinions on what to do about renting a car for our stay at Vero Beach.
We have never been to VB and have no idea about the area.
I also understand that I would be looking at about $85 in transportation costs each way to and from the airport (MCO)
We are also travelling with another family so there will be 8 of us.

All opinions and suggestions are appreciated!

I believe it would be much more than $85 ea way for 8 people to Vero Beach from MCO. It is about two hours from WDW to get to Vero. It is a resort that will be very difficult without a vehicle. Nothing is in walking distance really. I would suggest checking out renting a large van perhaps to hold all of you. Then you can get to the grocery stores, shopping, restaurants, etc. without going broke by calling cabs for 8 people.

Try pricelining a car. I got one for late aug ( in maybe feb/april), for 7$ a day plus tax, they upgraded 2 a standard for 2$ more, It was about 200$ incld tax/lic stuff for 10 days. I am not sure if 2 cars, or 1 van would be cheaper, but I would rent from MCO.

IMHO, yes abolutely you need a rental car at VB. Your cheapest (most likely) option is to rent at MCO and return to there.

Definitely rent a car, you may want to try Alamo. They have pretty good prices.

I wouldn't go to Vero without a car. We went to Walmart and Publix, Hale's Orchard for fresh OJ and we ate about half our meals out.
NOthing is really within walking distance of the resort.

I suggest PriceLine as well -

We are headed to Disneyland for a late summer vacation, and a few months ago I got a rental on Priceline for HUNDREDS below 'retail'

We rented a convertible through PriceLine for LESS per day than what my corporate negotiated rate is for Mid-Size!

While we haven't picked our car up yet, our experience with PriceLine has been great so far!

I'll have to post again when we return!

I'm hoping for a Ford Mustang! When I was at SNA back in the spring, Hertz has a ton of Mustangs - so I'm hoping that's what we get!

Another option if you don't wish to use Priceline is to use Orbitz, book the best rate, then check it once a week for a lower rate. As the trip gets closer we have found many times the rates drop.

For example, we just saved $300 on a 10 day minivan rental for next week by checking last week and seeing the rates went down.

I recommend looking into renting 2 compact cars instead of the van, you'll save money. At least it is cheaper for our April trip.
