Ok-when we go to Disney I've been looking at the nifty pins and lanyards.

I've held back previously but I'm not so sure that I can do this on our next trip.

The problem is that once I buy one, I'm sure that I''ll see another and another etc.

They would be cool to display when I'm at Disney but I'm not sure what I would do with the pins and lanyard when I get home.

When I first 'discovered' this pin thing, it was because I saw all these CM lanyards that had THIS PIN that I liked and wanted. The CM mentioned that it was a promo pin and you could not buy it. While, far from rare, you had to buy a pin at a store or cart and trade a CM for it.

Cannot...resist...temptation...

Several hundred pins later...I realize that I should have bought the heroin instead.

On the serious side...It is a socialable hobby! You get to talk to CMs and other guests that you otherwise never would have. It also gives you some additional 'new' fun and discovery, even after going to WDW again and again. Best advice if you start...don't worry about searching for the rare or limited editions, buy what you like! Pins that touch your fancy and mean something to you.

There are cast member lanyard only series that are fun to search for and cannot be purchased, but even in these series there will be ones that you do and don't like. Look for the ones you like.

Thank you for all of your replies.

I have not decided yet on whether or not I'm going to purchase a pin lanyard when we are down there.

My plan is to be two or three pins only per trip for attractions/rides that mean the most to me.

I have no plans to look for the rare eddition pins or make it to the level of the professional traders.

I'm going to keep it simple by a pin or two and keep within my budget.

Again, thank you all for your posts. You have given me the keys to pin trading -to make memories and make new friends.

I got hooked on pin trading in January 03. A month before our trip. I went to the disney store and got 13 pins for $1 each, I liked the pins too much so I decided I had to go back and get somemore. I kept getting more until we had about 100 to trade for. When we got to wdw there were just so many nice ones on the lanyards that I was very glad we had bought 100. We actually ran out and had to retrade our pins. These pins jumpstarted my collection, giving me keepers and traders. When we came back home I bought about 200 disney store pins again! I am very glad we did! With the new lanyard exclusive series out, I suggest you get at least 1 set of these- the price is high but worth it. You can check ebay for some better deals at times.

Because you might get hooked on a lanyard exclusive set like the "Wild about safety Pins *Lion King*" or "Baseball Pooh and Friends". and would like to frame them or something.

Just be careful, you might get hooked there and not have very many pins to trade! You sure dont wanna start your collection off there! CHA CHING!

If you have some self control it's a great way to meet people and lots of fun. I started the kids a couple of years ago and now all of us like trading. If you stick to cast members it makes it nice and easy. Even my shy and proper best friend (46 years old) was racing me to the CM's trying to see their pins first. If you can pick a character or two to collect it keeps your costs down and you'll probably trade some of this trips pins on your next trip anyway. We're actually thinking of making a headboard for our bed that will hold most of our pins.

I always buy a few pins each trip for myself. I think it's a nice souvenir of the trip and I only buy pins that I really like. In February, I'm taking my oldest son and daughter-in-law to Disney for the first time. I'd like to get them a lanyard and a few pins before the trip so that they can have some fun trading. What I'm wondering is how do people keep the pins on their lanyards? I've heard a suggestion of using a drop of clear nail polish, but I wonder if there are any others. What I've found in the past is that the pins can come loose fairly easily and before you know it, a favorite pin is gone.

My kids started buying pins during our last trip. I thought they better than other things that would be big and take up a lot of room on suitcases that needed to be packed for the plane.

Then when we got home, one of my DD traded a Disney Cruise Lab pin that I had bought for her. I was not happy!

So for Christmas, I bought both girls this pin bag to keep the pins we want to keep:

Still seems expensive (but it is a Christmas present). So I am 'hoping' in the future they collect pins to keep in the backpack and also some for the lanyard to trade.
