To Kill A Mockingbird/Harper Lee aficionados

I just finished reading, Mockingbird-A Portrait of Harper Lee by Charles J. Shields, and I must say, it was an extremely interesting and informative book!

I've always been a huge fan of anything to do with To Kill A Mockingbird, and I'm always on the lookout for more information about Nelle Harper Lee. There isn't a lot out there because she hasn't been in the public eye for many years and prefers to keep her life private.

However, through exhaustive research and time spent interviewing family, relatives, friends, acquaintances, (just about anyone who had any knowledge of Harper Lee that they were willing to share), the author managed to put together an extremely insightful look into the life of Harper Lee.

The book has a few photos, even one of Harper Lee as recently as last year, and reveals quite a bit about her friendship with Truman Capote and the time she spent in Kansas helping him interview people for his book, In Cold Blood.

If you're interested in knowing more about Nelle Harper Lee, I highly recommend this book!

the book 'capote' (of which only a minute portion was used for the movie) talks about harper lee in detail. it talks of their friendship from childhood on.

I'm glad to hear that you liked it--I saw it at the bookstore a few weeks ago and contemplated getting it but the reviews I'd seen weren't that great. I don't know why I believed them (I hardly ever agree with reviews) so I'm glad to get another opinion.

You should also check out the latest issue of Oprah's magazine. I was thrilled to see a letter to Oprah in there from Harper Lee talking about the importance of reading in her childhood. There are some good pictures in there, too. I don't ever read her magazine so it was a fluke that I'd picked up that particular issue.

I was a little leery about buying the book because I knew that Harper Lee declined to be interviewed for it, but I still found it fascinating to read.

I have this set and the documentary disc is wonderful!

DD's is reading this book right now, so I read the Cliff's Notes on Harper Lee. Pretty interesting stuff. That was the only novel she wrote!
