We are considering taking Amtrak in January. It has been about 7 years since we traveled by train, and then we used the Kissimmee station. The Sunset Limited no longer stops in Kissimmee, but ends in Orlando. Are there shuttle services (like Mears) waiting at the train station for a pre-set price, or do they have to be pre-arranged? Would it be easier to simply take a taxi? (I assume they are available), I don't want to go to the expense of a car rental...otherwise we may as well just drive down.

Thanks,

Taxi's are available at Orlando, as are rental cars and the semi-offical Coach USA shuttle to Orlando area atractions (including Disney resorts). That bus can be reserved in advance or upon your arrival in Orlando. Most of the various towncar and shuttle services seem to service the Orlando station also. To return to the station, you could even use Lynx.

Timekeeping for the Sunset should be improved by January (you don't want to know what the on-time average was last month), once Union Pacific figures out how to run its own railroad...

In the meantime, when eastbound train 2 is excessively late, Amtrak terminates the train at Sanford and buses passengers from there to Orlando. Again, this should be over long before your trip.
