The stretchy room is scary.
I'm glad everyone is enjoying the "Things Overheard..." and, of course, the reviews. I think I'll skip "Things Overheard..." for today, and just get straight to the food!
Today (Saturday) was our rest day, and we had ADRs at Flying Fish for dinner. What to do for lunch when at the Beach Club...? Oh! Beaches and Cream!
Lemme tell ya... people are taking this "What are you celebrating?" thing and running with it; I've never seen so many Kitchen Sinks during one slow-time lunch!!
Even though I love their chicken noodle soup, we were eating kinda late and we knew we wanted ice cream, so I decided to forgo. We both ordered the hot dog with chili and cheese w/ fries...
Now if you read my May review, you'll know we've become pretty disappointed with the burgers here lately, so we just decided to skip that altogether. The hot dogs were, as they were last time, very good. They have great fries at B&C, and the hot dogs are high quality. I like the chili, too; lots of stuff in it, so you feel like it's not *so* horrible for you!
For dessert... The No Way Jose!
You can see Mom and her spoon there, waiting for me to hurry up so she can dig in! We used to always get the Fudge Mud Slide, and while it's delicious, last May we switched to the No Way Jose. I don't think we've looked back. The peanut butter is so creamy and delicious, and the chocolate ice cream is just perfect. We looove this dessert, as I know many of you DIS'ers do, and it, if nothing else, will keep us coming back to B&C!!
We went back to the villa and napped our lunches away, and by the time we got to the Boardwalk we were pretty hungry. We were about 10 minutes late for our ADR (oops...), but tbh we were actually only about 4-5 minutes late; I waited forever behind this lady at check-in.
Regardless, we only waited a few minutes before we were seated, and we had a great table by the window. Ahhh, Flying Fish? How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...
1, The bread!
Munched, as you can see! This bread is very good, crunchy, a bit sour, and with really fantastic, creamy butter. Yum yum.
2, Cheeeese!!
I ordered the cheese plate as my appetizer. I kept my sheet with the cheese info, but I seem to've misplaced it. Oops. My favorite was the creamy one on the far right; it was fantastic with that jelly-like substance (wow, I sound very sophisticated!). The one with the dark rind was also very, very good, especially with the honey. I didn't care for the blue. At all.
As I said in my May review, if you like cheese but are hesitant to order a cheese plate - go for it! I really enjoy trying the cheeses with the accompaniaments (oy, sp), and it's a fun experience.
For her app, Mom got the soup...
On the menu the day before they were offering potato leek bisque with rock crab, but I guess the potatoes on Saturday were no good! This is a roasted tomato bisque with fennel and a grilled gouda sandwich on the side. Mom enjoyed the soup, but the chunks of fennel were quite large and she ate around them. I had a bite, and it was tasty goodness.
For our mains, I had the scallops...
Ahhhhh. I want to eat this right now. The scallops were good, of course, but the risotto... Wow. WOW. It was butternut squash and marscopone risotto. It was creamy, a little sweet, with a tiny bit of heat. Honestly, this risotto was one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth, and when you added a salty ham cracklin and a bite of perfectly cooked scallop...
Mom ordered the mahi-mahi...
It was almond-crusted mahi-mahi served on a bed of greens and beets and surrounded by a sauce that included (as you can see) rock shrimp. Mom didn't eat much of the fish, and when I had a bite I could tell why - it was a very, very large piece of fish, and it was actually fairly dry. I've never had an improperly cooked *anything* at FF, so I was really surprised. She and I both agreed the greens were fantastic, and she really enjoyed the shrimp.
For dessert, I had the peanut butter bread pudding...
This dish was my disappointment of the meal, which is very unusual at FF - I *love* their desserts! Firstly, I couldn't taste any peanut butter. The bread pudding was chock full o' bananas, which luckily I love, but there was no peanut butter flavor I could detect. Also, and I remember this from having their bread pudding before, it tasted a little burnt. Maybe it's how they warm it? I don't know. The bananas in it saved it from being too dry, but I wish I'd gotten something else, or split Mom's with her.
Her dessert was the no sugar added cheesecake...
I want to say it was the pumpkin cheesecake, but I wouldn't swear to it. I had a bite, and it was very creamy and delicious. She ate every bite (except mine!), and really enjoyed it. Ohh, right, THIS is what Flying Fish dessert is supposed to be like!
Though I was disappointed with my dessert, and Mom a bit with her fish, FF is still one of our favorite places. My risotto alone could've made up for nearly any blunder, especially the one as slight as I experienced with my dessert! Overall
