to cool for the beach?

We wanted to go to the beach on Sat. 10/14 while we are visiting DLR. Is it to cool for swimming in the ocean? Being from Utah we want our children to swim in the Pacific Ocean and enjoy a day at the beach. On weather.com it has Anaheim being around 80 degrees so would you considered that beach weather?

me personally? No...and I would be surprised if its actually 80º on the 14th as its been cooler this year than it usually is at this time of year but you never know...but to actually spend a day at the beach might get a little chilly

IMO it doesn't matter what the air temperature is. It is water temperature. I grew up in SoCal and lived near the beach for many years, and personally would not go in the water before Memorial Day or much after Labor Day. If I were you I woul dnot plan on being able to go in the water.

However, I am sure you can check water temperatures online somewhere. You can probably tolerate the water if it is 65 degrees, but I bet it will be closer to 60 during your visit.

I live in Oregon and we love our beach trips. We go year round and we just know that at this time of the year it is not going to be a go in the water day. Still I think you should go see the ocean, touch the sand, smell the air, maybe fly a kite. All that can be done in any kind of weather. But I agree with everyone else that the water may be just too cold to go very far into.

It is in the upper 70s at the beach (air temp) - but as a previous poster said - water temp is a different story. You can go to the beach - and play at the shore/at the water line (and still have a lot of fun).

But by 10/14 - who knows what the weather will be - we are waiting for rain right now but you wouldn't know it from the actual air temp. A few dark clouds but no real rain yet.

Plan on it - bring a sweatshirt and have pants that roll up so you can get your feel wet. Go and have fun!

I have to agree. We went last week with the kids and it was a little windy, not cold though. But the water (to me) is always freezing no matter what time of year. The kids had fun splashing and playing going in about up to their knees, but that was it. My one DD got knocked over by a wave and got her entire body wet. She was freezing after that and didn't want to go back in!

But it is still lots of fun to just splash a little and play in the sand! Have a great time!

We go to the beach at all times throughout the year, but we don't actually swim there other than summer. We do walk in the sand, and take our shoes off and walk through the water. We usually end up getting pretty wet, so a change of clothes is nice, but the water is usually too cold to actually spend any amount of time in.

It is usually windy at the beach - that just beach weather in SoCal. Our water temp is usually colder than the air temp - and as warm air rises - the colder air moves in from over the water.

I'd still go to the beach and take swimsuits. Even if it is cold you could spend some time playing on the beach and splashing around.

THat picture of your daughter sleeping near her plate bothers me - your daughter is sweet - it is really the food that bothers me. Have you ever noticed? - it is all yellow! I don't blame her for pushing it aside - it looks boring Disney needs to take a look at presentation

i used to live in san diego and i would go swim in the water any time of year. i've gone on christmas, new year's, thanksgiving, easter, etc.

i always had a fun time, but i'm also weird, so it might just be me..

i saw the pacific ocean for the first time tuesday at laguna beach. the day was nice for the beach -- 85 degrees and comfortable, not really a sunburn kind of day you know -- but the water was pretty cold. i stood on shore but where the waves were washing up below my knees for about 30 minutes but it was too cold to swim.

Just a note; for those who are used to the Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean--the Pacific will always feel cold. It does not "warm" until much farther south than the California coastline.

However; growing up in southern California I swam in the Pacific all year round--you just need a wet suit when it's very cold.....

Anaheim is inland. The beach will traditionally be 10 degrees cooler. If you pick a beach like Newport, you could always go to the Fun Zone if it is too cold for the kids.

Thanks for all the replies and info. Sounds like we will still go but just plan on splashing around and playing in the sand. Thanks for the temp. link for oceans. I will keep checking as we get closer.

We are going the end of October so I just figured it would be cold. SInce Indiana does not have an ocean close we are going to take my kids to just see it and experience the beach part

I always enjoy the beach, even if the weather's not real warm. Here in Portland, I make sure to have a sweatshirt or light jacket when I head to the coast. Even "cool" SoCal weather is usually warmer than here. Rain, or really strong winds are the only things that bother me at the beach.

My DH would swim all year round if he still lived there. It's too cold for me though. I usually only go in up to my knees, even in May/June.
