To car hire or not to car hire!

You made the right choice by renting a car. The mentality toward walking/buses is completely different to our own. I drove in Orlando for the first time in 2011. You get used to it. The roads are nice and big, although I find their signage fairly unclear to that over here. I bought TomTom USA for my iphone. It doesn't need to use data and the best thing is the way it had a pictogram of junctions, showing you what lane to be in. It was £40 from the App Store, but worth every penny!

I think if I knew I was going regularly I would do this but for what will be a one off trip for now, then £15 to hire a GPS is perfect for my needs. It'll be interesting to see how I compare the driving to the UK and NZ, I've driven extensively in both so US will be a nice new experience! (She says optimistically!).

I just consulted Google, on the list :thumbsup2

I also just found someone on eBay who rents satnav for your holiday, I was weighing up my options on this, not really wanting to pay the hire car company charges for one but not really wanting to pay for the added mobile bill when I have free wifi in the hotel. This is a nice alternative if it all goes smoothly!

i bought a GPS device from Amazon and had it delivered to my hotel - it was pretty cheap - i got a cheap one, but it worked great!!..
i wouldn't have found my way around without it i don't think..

I used to be great with a map, moved to New Zealand for a couple of years about 10 years ago now and got everywhere with an old fashioned A-Z. Attempted the same a couple of years ago on an unfamiliar route in the UK, turned into quite the adventure!

So I really wanted something but didn't want to pay the really quite ridiculous amount the rental company asks. So compromise found, I happen to think £15 for a fortnight is a bargain, especially there being a good chance I won't need it again for some time.

I have however, just ordered some clothes to be delivered to my hotel. I do a lot of shopping from the US (best place for vintage and vintage reproduction clothing) and one has a brilliant sale on at the moment. Cheaper shipping and no customs fees and extra holiday clothes. That's my shopping treat as I'm not likely to hit the malls while there, nothing in them for me.

Getting excited now, just over a week to go!

i'm also great with a map - the problem i've found in orlando is the signage isn't that great....at least i've found it quite confusing..
the GPS device made up for it!!

as for sales - there are great memorial day sales in the states right now!!
