To Camp or Not To Camp

DH and I debating if we should camp on our trip to Disney in Sept. We have never camped at Fort Wilderness but have always wanted to. The thing we will be traveling with our dd and her family, her dh doesn't want to camp. We would save money if we camped, but if they don't want to camp DH and I would only save about $400.00. With gas as high as it is I can't decide if its worth it or not.
What do ya'll think, we will be traveling from NC.

I would camp myself and let them stay wherever they wanted to. That 400.00 will pay for a lot of gas.

Have you looked into sharing a cabin with them? You can make your own meals, the kids would have lots of room to run around, and you can still enjoy the campground without "camping"!

The cabins will sleep up to 6 people.

I second the vote for you go camping and they can stay where they want. If it really becomes an issue and it is going to tear the family apart, just go with a hotel room--somethings just aren't worth it. Either you or they can get transportation to and from the campground to other Disney properties and they can come and hang out at the campground in the evenings with you. Fort Wilderness is really, really nice and we just had our first stay there recently. I am so glad we stayed there this time and not in a hotel. Would they stay in one of the cabins or does he think of that as camping? We did the drive from NC as well----from the mountains. We spent a ton of money on gas---over $800. I followed behind in the mini van and spent $200 on the van. So in all we spent $1,000 on gas to get there. (our truck only holds three people) What about a condo that has two or three bedrooms? I say go for the campground if you really want to stay there, but only if it doesn't cause a big stink with everyone else.

When I was a kid, my family would camp in the Adirondacks and my uncle and aunt would get a cabin in a nearby town. They would come over and enjoy the day with us, stay until evening and enjoy the campfire. Then they would go back to their hotel / cottage at night.

I think that if your family is willing, it might work out fine - it probably would be worth asking about.

The cabin idea sounds good as well.

I think Rhonda nailed it....staying in the cabins would be a great idea if its affordable for you...that way you do indeed get to enjoy all that the fort has to offer, and youre not exactly roughing it...the cabins are pretty luxurious in my opinion...kind of a rugged luxury, if ya will. Its the best of both worlds.

I would do the math and see what works for you. You might be better off in a cabin. JMHO

We decided to stay on site as the gas would cost us 800 dollars to get there, (MOre now since deisel is almost 4.50 a gallon!!!) Anyway, we could get there faster and with free dining we chose 2 rooms at a value. All meals included.

I agree! We stayed at POR a few years ago when our DS got married at WDW. It was going to be a quick trip down and back, and DH didn't want to tow the TT so far for such a short trip. He ended up going over to FW one afternoon because we missed it so much. We were miserable in that hotel room! (BTW, we're from NC too!)

Something you didn't mention that may swing you away from camping unless you do get a cabin is free dining. Its available at certain resorts during september. It saves you about 200 bucks a person on food. Free dining is not an option for regular campers only the cabins and other resort rooms are eligible.

For the record thats why Im returning to POFQ this year instead of taking my new Pop-Up to the Fort. That and the ever rising gas prices. I calculated it that it will cost me an extra $100 in gas to tow my camper there and then I would have to buy food and cook. So I will save around 900 total by staying at the resort instead the Fort.

I pay my own gas bill so no need for you to worry! It's much nicer to come home to my own bed after a long day at the parks. The fresh air at the fort is much nicer than than small stuffy resort rooms. If you've never camped then you wouldn't understand but campers are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Always eager to lend a helping hand. No need to be politically correct. Just laid back.

i don't think there is a ?....I'd much rather stay in my camper and have all my comforts than sit in a hotel room wishing I had this or that from home to make me happy....yeah with gas prices I could be staying at a high priced hotel for the cost...but then again...I'm HOME wherever I go in the TT!!!!!!!!!!!
