Quick question for you! I'm making a chocolate cake tonight. The recipe calls for "white sugar". Does that mean granulated sugar or icing sugar? The reason I ask is that in other recipes in this cookbook, it specifically says granulated or icing sugar - but this recipe just says white sugar. Any thoughts?

I would guess granulated sugar.. the differences being between white and brown sugar..

I think it may mean granulated sugar. Most cake recipes use granulated sugar.

I bake a lot and I've never heard of icing sugar. Is that super fine sugar or 10X sugar?

I have no idea why I clicked on this thread. I am in no way, an "expert" baker. But common sense tells me that if you are using this "white" sugar in a cake, it would be granulated. The recipe probably says "white" as opposed to "brown" sugar. Powdered sugar would be for the frosting, for a smoother consistency(by the way, use 10X or higher for frosting or it will be gritty). Powdered sugar has corn starch in it, so before you go any further, I would be sure of which one to use.

That's the most useless advice I have ever given.. Sorry..

yeah that would be granulated sugar. Icing sugar is powdered sugar

Wow - thanks to all! I hadn't even gotten up from the computer after posting and I already had a bunch of responses. Thanks! I'll go with granulated sugar then!

In regards to icing sugar, I'm not exactly sure what it is, other than the consistency of it. It's very thin - similar to flour in texture. I use it for making no-bake peanutbutter balls.
