So far this year, I have had:

.....an acquaintance I had not seen, by choice, in over 3 years drop by because he was "in the neighborhood" when I was home sick from work one day. I made the mistake of not wanting to appear rude, and inviting him in, and then promptly showing him the door when he started talking about the unfairness in getting fired from his job because he refused to meet with customers who are "retards" (and he did, in fact, mean developmentally disabled folks).

....an ex-boyfriend (AKA "The Sociopath") whom I had not seen nor spoken to in almost 5 years, drop by because he was "in the neighborhood" at 9 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Having learned my lesson from drop-by #1, I made him stand on the porch, and politely excused myself when he proceeded to tell me how his ex-wife had burned down their house and moved across the country, in a conspiracy to seperate him from his children. (The same wife, incidentally, who "forced" him to cheat on her, then had the gall to leave him for it......apparently she and I were cut from the same cloth, because I somehow managed to "force" him to cheat on me, too. What a string of bad luck for this fella, huh?).

....2 elderly gentlemen from a church I have not attended in over 6 years, drop by because the were "in the neighborhood" and wanted to offer some fellowship on a hot, humid and stormy Wednesday evening at 8:30pm. Oh, Did I mention hot and humid? Because at the time I was sitting in my underwear and a skimpy tank top in the living room, watching TV and trying to find the right balance of open window that allowed maximum breeze and minimal rain into the house.

I'm not exactly sure what has been making all of these people feel it is appropriate to drop by AFTER YEARS OF NO CONTACT when they are "in the neighborhood". Have I mentioned I live in a remote location, and the odds of just happening to have been "in the neighborhood" are next to nil?

*sigh*

So I just wanted to say, to anyone ELSE out there from my past who has a hankering to just drop by because you happen to be "in the neighborhood".....please call first, so I can at least put some pants on. Thanks.

We recently moved to a gated community and at my DHs work a women complained to him and said...why would you move to a gated one, then people can't stop by to visit you? DH responded- Exactly, I don't want people just showing up at my house, if we want you there we'll invite you. She just started laughing.

I never just drop by unannounced to anyone's home...family or friends. It is just plain rude. I do not like it when some one does it to me either.

Thanks for the laugh.

Now I have to clean up my keyboard, because I just sprayed Pepsi all over it!

palmtreegirl, your husband is a very, very wise man.

4cruisin, I know! Isn't this insane? As my best friend said, she wouldn't even drop by her MOTHER'S HOUSE without at least a quick phone call first. I have no idea what is compelling all of these people to do this recently. I swear, I really don't have a sign on my roof that says "please stop in!" or anything at all like that.

Sandy, sorry about the pepsi. But glad I made you laugh. :)

I know where you live ;) I believe that is one of the reasons my DH liked this gated community too. And as for unwanted phone calls, we have caller ID. :teeth:

LOL Nah, you don't want to do that. Humidity makes me cranky. And no one likes a sweaty, cranky chick, undies or no undies. :)

LOL If you're really lucky, maybe I'll be smelly, too. (It just gets better and better, doesn't it?) puckerup:

Are all of these people from the South. We drop in on each other all the time without calling. If you call first, they think your mad at them or delivering bad news.

Central AC is just great. I didn't like the window units when we lived there (NE) or the electric toasters for heat in the winter.

Happy Thoughts to all,

mt2

I have a story about this!

I was a leasing agent in the apartment compex that I lived in. Well apparently, the maintanence guys had a leak upstair in the apartment above me.

I was home, I had the day off, but it was during work hours and they just assumed I wasn't.

They walked in and I was completely naked!!! I had never been so embarrased. They apologized and left..but these are people I work with!

From then on, they knocked ALWAYS!!!

onecoolmama, that's really funny. LOL

mt, maybe it is a regional thing, I don't know. I suppose it would be one thing if these people were close to me and I had more or less daily contact with (or heck, even weekly or monthly or for that matter, yearly!), but I just think it is so bizarre that in the past 3 months, I've gotten drop-by visits by people who are essentially strangers to me now.

And Eeyore, you're really making me laugh. Maybe we can talk politics in the buff. That should be interesting. (And glad to see you've gotten into the CB spirit what with the excessive smileys. LOL)

LOL!

I, too, hate "drop byes." My entire family was incredibly annoyed with me (almost as much as I with them) because I refused to "entertain" drop by visitors. I think my MIL wanted to strangle me because she would come over almost daily while DH was at work without calling even though DH and I both politely requested that she call first--she only lives 5 minutes away. (I also lounge around in my undies occasionally.)

We started to keep the doors locked and just wouldn't answer (because of course if we didn't answer and the doors were unlocked she would come in anyway--that's convenient for newlyweds, huh?!) She also used to drop in to leave DH's younger brother to be babysat without asking if we had plans! That's really what started the not answering the door bit. Can you believe that once she dropped him off in our driveway and left without even coming to the door to see if we were "available" to watch him!?! (He was about 10 at the time.)
