I am so frustrated, and I apologize about this being personal, but I figure most women deal with it at some point in their life. Plus at this point, I'm so miserable that I have no shame.

I have had a yeast infection for 3 weeks now... I have no immune system right now due to treatments for Crohns, so I am prone to them. I have never had such problems getting rid of one!

The first week, I took 2 Diflucan that my doc had given me, gave it a few days... didn't go away. Took the last Diflucan I had, and waited. Didn't go away. So I bought a 3 day Vagistat treatment. Felt better, but didn't go away. It is back full force. I made it through the weekend, and called my gyno first thing Mon morning, but she is out of town this week. Figures. Called my PCP, who called in Diflucan for me again, but only one 150 mg pill. I can't remember how much the others were that I had, I threw away the sample bottle already, but those didn't get rid of it...

I took that pill last night, and am still miserable. What should be the next step? How long does it take for the Difucan to kick in? The packaging says that if in 3-5 days symptoms are still there, contact your doc. I may shoot myself in the head before then... I can't sleep at all, as you can imagine.

Should I try another over the counter? I did have one a few months back that took two Monistat's in a row to knock out, but at $15 a pop, I'm hesistant to throw more money in this...

What would you do? Would you call the doc again tomorrow? Or give it another day? Would you go out and get a OTC tonight and do that too? I already called the pharamacist and he said that taking Diflucan and using an OTC treatment won't counter each other out...

Thanks, and I apologize again for the sensitive subject.

I think I would call the doc, especially since you have other medical problems, though probably unrelated to the yeast infection. The Doc may have a stronger prescription that could be written.

call your doc tomorrow and ask for terazol. there are 3 different types of yeast that can cause nfections and the most common one is candida albicans--the one that the otc works for as well as diflucan.

however, if you just treat the one yeast, then the other less common yeasts may thrive and the treatments you've used so far won't cover those. terazol will.

i also want to add--are you sure it's yeast and not something else? if unsure you may want to get an examine since the symptoms will never go away if you're not using the right treatment.

good luck

I thought the thread was talking about Three Mile Island (the Nuclear Power Plant known as TMI) and how it may have caused a yeast infection. Whoa! :p

The Doc will have a super powerful cream or pill that will most likely zap that yeast infection right out of there. You may find it is a bacterial infection as well, which should be treated right away. They are very similar in symptoms. So go to the Doc and ask for the powerful stuff and you'll be feeling better in no time. Good luck. :wave2:

I'm sorry that I have no advice for what you should do now, but I would suggest that you start taking acidophilous (sp?) for prevention. That is the bacteria found in yogurt. I've heard that buying it in powder form and not pill form is the best. I guess it needs to be refrigerated to live. I think you can find it in the diary department of the grocery store or a health food store.

I haven't bought the stuff in years. Maybe someone here knows something about it and can give you more information.

Good luck.

Are you sure it is not a UTI? The last time I thought I had a yeast infection and treated as such, it didn't make it better at all. I went to the doctor and it turned out to be a UTI.

I have never had a UTI... do you mind explaining more about the differences? All I have is a constant itch. No pain this time, really, just itch itch itch. Do UTI's do that?

I will call my PCP again tomorrow and go see her... I feel more comfy getting tested by my gyno, which I was ready to do on Monday, but since she was gone, I just asked for the Diflucan instead of going in... I think it's time to suck it up and see her.

Thanks again, y'all.

I hate being a woman.

This is what my mother does...go to the supermarket and buy some plain yogurt. Smear it on. I'm not sure how many days she does this, but it works for her. Good luck!
