I just realized that I will start my period the day we are set to leave!!! Have any of you ever started a new pack of pills without taking the week of placebo pills in order to ward off AF?? Any problems doing this?

I use Nuvaring, but I find that whenI try to skip the placebo week to avoid my period, I will often get breakthrough bleeding that lasts 2 weeks or so. Although, it's much lighter than a period, it is still inconvenient- actually moreso, so I don't do this anymore. YMMV.

 Had to do this for more than one beach vacation... no problems whatsoever. Even my ob/gyn said that it was okay for me to do.

Absolutely okay to do. And my OB/GYN agrees as well. I've done it before vacations, especially since I have menstrual migraines and don't want to risk the headaches while away from home.

It's safe to do, I don't recommend doing it all the time though. My doc says to not do it more than 6 months in a row.

I am always on Schedule to the day and have counted down Guess What me too. But I dont take pills or anything had my tubes cut. Is there a shot that lets you hold off? But we will be gone 15 days will it last that long or am I just doomed? Good Luck to you Hope it works out. Nothing worse than mother nature taking over during that long awaited for vacation. I am ready to cry!!

As long as you aren't especially sensitive to the hormones, you should be fine. I had to be on a very low-dose pill because I suffered withdrawl during the placebo week on higher doses. I tried the 3 months on-1 week off method and swore I would never do it again. It was worse than childbirth and lasted for a week.

However - I'm *very* sensitive to oral contraceptives, my withdrawl symptoms involved sensory hallucinations for 3 days - so I don't think I'm exactly a "standard" case.

I would put in a call to your gyn and see what they have to say. More than likely it'll be fine. I'm on Nuvaring and at the beginning of the year my gyn had me change the way I do mine. Every 3 weeks I put a new one in, then after the 4th one I have my period. So, I only have mine every 12 weeks and it's SOOO nice! lol ;)

Please check with your gyn. This does not work with all types of birth control pills. I believe if you are on a mini-pill it will not work.

my ob-gyn told me this was totally ok to do (i've been on this type of b/c pill for over 10 years), and i've recently discovered our wdw vacation in september will be the week of my period, so i've decided to skip it in june or july so it'll happen the week before we leave instead, lol.

My doctor actually recommended that I do this and only take the placebo every three months because I had horrible PMS. She said it is completely safe and I have read articles in magazines recently where GYNS are saying a woman only needs to have here period 2 to 4 times year. I would say go for it but talk to your Dr first.

Could you possibly get a "trial" prescription for BC and take it long enough to "reset" your period? That's what I did last time. I made an appointment with my county health department and they gave me 90 days worth of BC. It was the easiest way (no doctor's appointment, no co-pay, no prescriptions to fill) and worked out for me. I think I had to pay a "pro-rated" fee which was based on my income but it was less than $50.

Thanks for all the responses! I will call my doctor but it sounds like it should be just fine! YAY!!

yes you can - as long as you don't go more then 90 days without a period and obviously you won't. That is why Seasonale is getting so popular lately - you only get a period every 3 months....

I just go with it wat is so bad about havin it on vacation just use tapons..i gues that wat i will have 2 do

I take only the active bc pills (not placebos) for 2 months, then for the 3rd month I will take the placebos and get a period. This has been ok'd by my doctor.
A word of warning....when I forst started doing this I had VERY bad PMS during the week I should have had a period. It was way worse than any PMS I had ever gotten. Also...the first period I had after starting this method was very heavy, crampy.
It's all fine now, but I've been doing this for almost 2 years.
So you may need to weigh this. If you don't normally take bc pills, I wouldn't try this. Too much hormone fluctuation. I think you'll feel gross.

How long before you leave? I would skip the placebos a couple months before to throw off the schedule. I skipped them for my honeymoon and still had a light one anyway. If I would have thought ahead I could have done it the month before and it wouldn't have hit during the honeymoon.

I never thought of that. Sounds like a wondeful idea. I will make an appt. and see. Thanks for letting me know about this. and Good Luck to you money4mickey. Hope it works out for you and thanks for posting on this topic. It seems a concern for many of us.

Speaking as a family physician who sees lots of women for gynecologic problems, skipping the placebo week might work for you. I have had lots of problems with patients with the Seasonale pills that have had difficulty with spotting the first three months or so. (This is equivalent to taking three months of low dose pills in a row, theoretically only have four periods in a year). I usually advise patients that it isn't for certain that they can keep from having their period by doing what you propose. It usually takes a few months for your body to adjust. Some people do just fine, and that is great. If a person were getting married, and wanted to keep from bleeding on their honeymoon, for example, I would suggest trying to skip the placebo week several months before the wedding, so that they could see how their body reacts to that change. Depo provera, also, may result in spotting during the entire three month time the shot is active, rather than the amenorrhea that is more common with that. We can't predict how any particular patient will react to a specific birth control pill or shot.
