Has anyone had experience with TKTS in NYC for Broadway shows. I would like to see Mary Poppins or Lion King during Christmas break. I would like to try to get tickets from TKTS, but I was wondering if there is a good chance of me getting tickets.

We love TKTS and have had great luck there. Mary Poppis has been showing up lately bit I have never seen Lion King there. That said, Christmas break is a whole different ball game. That week is heavy on families and family-friendly shows have less availability than at other times. I wouldn't count on TKTS having either show during that week. You can always take your chances, but if you have your heart set on seeing one of those shows I'd get tickets in advance.

Before you decide to stand in line, you can check what shows are available for that day. You might have a better chance of getting a particular show if you use the TKTS booth at the South Street Seaport, which you can access via subway (sorry, I don't remember which line we took). They sell tickets there for the following day.

That being said, I agree with the PP - Christmas break is a whole different ballgame. There are many fewer shows up at TKTS. It's almost like asking, "Can I get a walkup lunch seating at Le Cellier during Christmas week?" Possible, but not likely.

While it's not a guarantee, you can check out the TDF (Theater Development Fund) website for TKTS to see what was at the booths the prior week. It's usually a good indication of what you will see, but again, if you go during peak season, I wouldn't have my hopes up for one or two shows. You really need to have an open mind if you are using TKTS.
