Is it good for a year?

A little over a year. I think it goes back to the time when they were only available through the mail. They are good through the last day of the month of the next month that you purchase it in. We bought ours on Feb 5, 2010 and it expires March 31, 2011. (we also had one that we bought May, 2008 and it expired June 30, 2009.)
