Tired of my sons diet...

I swear he gets more finicky every day!
Now he's starting to turn down his usual favorite of mac-n-cheese. He'll still ask for it, but he'll only pick at it...unless it's from KFC that, he'll lick the bowl clean for that stuff.
So, now he eats peanut butter, cheese pizza (although once in awhile he'll do pepperoni), Go-gurts (only pink ones) or strawberry Crush Cups (from Dannon), and other such awful foods. His favorite snack right now is Cheezit and marshmallows. He makes little mini-sandwhiches out of them. He adores tootsie rolls and purple Juicy Drop Pops (which he gets only rarely as a prize treat). He'll drink milk and Juicy Juice fruit punch (only if it's in the box).
We tried the GF/CF diet with him a couple years back (DS is 8 1/2 yrs. btw) and it didn't have any notable results. After a time he stopped drinking anything buy Juicy Juice and water because any way we presented soy or almond milk to him he wouldn't touch. Heck, he lost a little weight (not too big a deal as he's on the big side anyways...). After 3 months we gave up on it.
I've tried just about anything to get my son to eat fruits or veggies. I've snuck them into his pizza sauce. It didn't work, he said it smelled yucky and wouldn't eat it. I've read a dozen books and talked to nutrionists. They all tell me he needs to eat better, but no one, no book has yet to make a difference.
Now when he doesn't like a food he says "I awergic to _fill in the blank_"
*sigh*
Just venting here folks. He's actually pretty healthy, he's heavy but not so much that his Dr. is alarmed. He has no GI issues. He's got energy and is happy most of the time.
I've been told his apraxia (he's autistic, btw) may be a contributing factor to his diet preferences. I've been told he may have a stronger sense of smell and that fruits and veggies may just smell repellent to him. I've been told he may change when he hits puberty... ugh...
*sigh*
Thanks for letting me vent.

Not giving advice (cause all children are different), but sharing my similar experience.

My son was like this as well (ADD and high functioning Aspergers).. he would only eat Jamacian Beef patties, chicken nuggets and french fries, and he wouldn't eat any meat/proteins unless it was processed all to mush. it was really really stressfull...

and then our nutrionalist pointed out that he could only eat the foods we gave him. He suggested we find a recipie website that had pictures and let him pick out food that looked interesting, tell him what was in it, and let him plan one meal week like that. other than that, if he didn't like what we had for dinner, he didn't eat. We also started watching food channel a lot so he could see people enjoying all sorts of different foods, and seeing food as fun, and/or art rather than just smell and flavor..

It was REALLY REALLY HARD.... he didn't eat anything for three days, didn't like ANY of the food on the websites, but eventually, hunger got the best of him and he started playing along.

We now try to find something new each week, and he has expanded his food tastes quite a bit.

Good luck and don't lose hope!!

I can understand your frustration. My son will love a food and eat it all the time and then all of a sudden he hates it. Months later he's loving it again. I wish I could tell how to make it stop, but no one has told me yet...:lmao: Thnaks for venting because now I know I'm not alone in this. I hope thing will get better for you.

I understand the only wanting the same thing. My DS does like many foods but has only wants quesodia's (SP), Corn tortilla only (GF) for school day breakfast for the last two years. I am so tired of making them.

I know what you mean: tacos, burgers with cheese only, and pizza. That's it for meals (any and all meals). Snacks: popcorn, lemon ice, cheetos
I am tired of cooking tacos 3 or 4 times per week and burgers the alternate nights. We only get pizza every now and then. UGH! His nutritionist noticed that there are no crunchy items so we TRY to eat raw carrots but the nutritionist limited it to fresh only so that is hard to get in winter; maybe now that spring is here I'll be able to get them easier. That's our goal this next year is carrots and then we'll add another in the fall. DS is 15 yo.

I am sure it is no laughing matter to you while you are cooking up quesodias every morning, but after reading your post I could not help but to think about that old Dunkin Doughnut add when the man was always going out the door saying " Time to make the doughnuts".

Yes, I can laugh about it. It was just great to read someone else's post dealing with these issues.

I feel like that every morning, and actually think it a lot of mornings! Luckily my son eats a banana and 3 vitamins for breakfast every morning, so thats a little easier. Then I pack him the exact same lunch every day, Schwan chicken nuggets, potato chips, a prepacked red jello with fruit, a pack of fruit snacks and a granola bar for morning snack.

The ONLY "meal" foods he has are chicken nuggets and an occasional Subway sandwich (and no it can't be homemade it HAS to be a subway turkey and bacon with lettuce and tomato which he picks off!) Basically, my son could live on Schwan chicken nuggets and bananas.

I've been on Atkins diet and have gotten so sick of eating the same foods that I just can't stand it. I don't know how my son can eat the same brand specific prepackaged foods every day of his life...
