Tips to Beat (Or bear) the Heat

Curious: has WDW's ac been working well lately overall? We never visit in summer, but I've read quite a few complaints on these boards and FB that the stores and indoor attractions felt much warmer the past few years....vs ice cold the way they used to be.
I don’t know. I don’t think it’s set as high as it used to be, but maybe it is just hotter out now than in the past like the poster before says.

But, I’m not sure, even on our party night, when we went in buildings with only a handful of people, it wasn’t cold inside. It was cooler than outside, yes, but not freezing. I used to always need a jacket because it would be cold inside at stores, lines, and restaurants, like MIB hallway cold. This last trip, I never needed a jacket inside, even at night, even in uncrowded buildings. Whatever the reason, it’s not getting cold inside anymore like it used to.

How not to get hot: DON’T GO OUTSIDE!

How to survive and not have heat stroke:

Cooling towels and hats have worked best for us. As well as taking it slow and taking breaks.

The other thing is make sure you are drinking water and something with electrolytes, Gatorade or Powerade or something similar. A lot of people don’t realize you can get dehydrated even if you are drinking lots of water. Avoid sodas. Those alone will definitely dehydrate you. You need a good balance of water and sports drinks. Too much of either can make you sick. When we have access to a freezer, we also do the pedialite popsicles in the summer which are great. My teens like those, and it was always easier to get them to eat them than to drink the sports drinks.

It’s going to sound crazy but our family is going in September, which I’m hearing is miserably hot, and a couple of us overheat easily and also get really crabby when hot.

What are you must haves in the park bag and tips to beating the heat, while not taking too much time away from activity
The must-haves is definitely drinks. And the tips for the heat is to just stay cold! Stay in air conditioned buildings and take a few hours to have fun in the resort pools.

I was there in June and it was very hot on several days. The best advice as others have noted, go in early and return to your hotel before lunch and hang around your resort until dinner time. Have your dinner and then you might return to the parks in the evening. The afternoon is unbearable for the most part.

I'm going in September too, and yes it will be hot and muggy. Things that help me survive are

A sun umbrella. Just pay attention to your surroundings.
Drinking tons of water, and adding a smart water or powerade drink into the mix every so often. It does make a difference.
A fan you can wear.
Sunblock. Reapply before it feels like you need more.
Shirts with sleeves that are lightweight, or moisture wicking. Keeping the sun directly off of my shoulders makes me feel cooler.

Long sleeved UV Blocking shirts. While it sounds a bit counter-intuitive, a loose fitting shirt that blocks the sun from your skin can really help. Just learned this one.

Resign yourself to being damp to downright wet. If it isn’t sweat, it’s rain, or other water that you have voluntarily spritzed, sprayed, wrapped or immersed in! Be careful, because this can also leave little ones or older folk vulnerable to a chill in a well air-conditioned environment. We learned this on our first big family trip, and had to take sweaters for our youngest and oldest members during meals and indoor shows.

It does not even cool appreciably in the evenings or overnight.

As one who does poorly in the heat, an umbrella was essential. There was no way I could stand wearing a poncho or any other protective clothing in the rain. We lucked into a record-breaking Sept for rainfall. But, we still had fun, surrounded by all the other drowned rats. Only Mickey and Minnie always managed to look wonderful!

A misting fan would be a great idea, it works wonders for me. Maybe look into getting one before your trip because the ones they sell in the parks, while adorable, are expensive. A mid-day break to go back to your hotel and swim or just sit in some AC would help. Stay hydrated, don't be afraid to find somewhere indoors to rest for a bit if you start to feel hot. It's better to take a short break than to overdo it and be grumpy or uncomfortable, or worse, make yourself sick.

The frogg-toggs work well and keep much colder then other products. I am miserable in the heat but with the towels, the fun of Disney and jumping from air conditioning to air conditioning I was fine.
