Hi, we are headed to the DLR next week for a 5 day trip. We are bringing my mother-in-law who is diabetic, and I was just wondering if any of you Disneyland pro's know of some good places to eat at DL and DCA that would work for someone who is diabetic. I'm hoping she won't get stuck eating salad our whole trip :)

Thanks

I am a diabetic and I eat high protein meals with very little carbs, the more complex type. I would think she would have a universal diet for keeping her sugars in tow. I have no problem finding what I need. Good luck,

Jack

You did not say if she is T1D or T2D? Management is different as they are not the same thing. :confused3

My daughter is T1D and she can eat any where or anything that anyone else can - so long as she boluses for it. For carb counting we carry and use the calorieking book. We have not done DL yet with D but we have done a cruise and entered several 'third world' areas. We use a frio pouch to transport insulin, I'm kind of 'meh' on the frio pouch - I've had insulin spoil in it so we only use it to transport the insulin from one fridge to another. And we carry snacks and fruit, as well as low supplies just in case we end up somewhere that has food she doesn't like, or to round out a meal that may not have the best fruit option.

We know what she can eat as a diabetic (type 2). I guess I was wondering more if there are any specific restaurants that seem to be more diabetic friendly?? I looked at some of the restaurant menus, and most of what I saw she could eat would be salads. I also saw alot of sandwiches, but we are trying to stay away from the carbs....Also are there any restaurants that will modify their menu for special dietary needs?

Thanks again

Most restraurants will work with you. Ask to talk to the chef and explain your situation, he/she may be able to alter the dish to meet her needs.

Along this note, the sit-down restaurants are a little more flexible than the quick counter-service places. I won't lie, Disneyland doesn't have a ton of low-carb options, so you kind of have to make your own. You can always order a sandwich patty without the bun. Bengal BBQ is a good option as they offer meat and vegetable skewers. The sauces, however, are sweet, so you can ask to have your skewers plain or with sauce on the side if you're concerned there is too much sugar in it. As someone above mentioned, they do have the turkey legs. There is also a vegetarian chili that usually comes in a bread bowl but you can order it in a regular bowl instead. The mexican restaurants in DCA and DL also have fajita/taco platters, so you could order those and not eat the tortillas. These are quick service ones that come to mind. As I said in the beginning, the sit-down restaurants will be more flexible and you can actually speak with a chef if you like.

Previous posters mentioned Turkey legs, Bengal Kabobs - there is also the fruit vendor. We're fans of buffets too as there are usually more options to cobble a meal together. She may have a problem with the taste of the water - we bring along crystal light packs to flavor it.

actually salads are carbs, so she would certainly want to focus on protein as her must have at every meal. Remember the exercise may make her medication work more efficiently, so be ready to treat any lows. But even when treating lows it is important to pair the simple carb with a source of protein to avoid starting the "yo yo" effect.

Disneyland is getting better, some places that have good options with their new menus:
Hungry Bear
The Mediterranean Grill at DCA
Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta at DCA
Tanagaroa Terrace at DLH
Village Haus

All have high protien, low carb options. Additionally the Disney blog has recently posted that the sit down restaurants have sugar free cake available upon special request, even though they aren't on the menu.

Gibson Girl also offers Sugar Free butter pecan ice cream and the candy shops offer sugar free options as well.
