Tips on Deluxe Dining Plan - Only if...

Just got back from a nine-day trip on the Deluxe Dining Plan. While we did manage to use all of our meal credits, a large part of that was due to buying a bunch of packaged items from the gift shop while we were waiting for our express bus.

Having experienced the plan, I have these tips for those considering it:

1. If you want to plan for at least one two-point meal (which are generally character meals, dinner shows, room service, or exceptionally fancy places), then the deluxe plan might actually be worth it for you. We were able to burn our points only by doing four different character meals, two dinner shows, and one room service.

2. If you want your Disney trip to be mostly about the food and don't mind missing large sections of other aspects of the park (which is perfectly fine for a lot of people), then by all means try this plan.

3. The only reason we used all our snack points was because of all the tasting we did at the Food and Wine Festival, AND we were generous with them for others in the snack cart lines the last two days of our trip.

4. That being said, some say not to use your snack points for bottles of water or drinks. We used some of ours for those drinks and don't regret doing so.

5. Be prepared for deluxe table meals to take TIME. That, really, was my biggest peeve of being on the plan. But if you're at a table service, by the time you are served appetizer, entree, and dessert, it easily takes over an hour, or even up to two hours if the place is exceptionally busy, which is absolutely HUGE when you only have 7-10 hours at the park, maximum. And if you do that three times a day...(!). The buffets, really, and the fast pass schedules were pretty much what kept us out of the restaurants.

Thanks for these tips! I have tossed the idea around a few times, but have been going in more off season times when park hours are shorter, so you confirmed it would take up a lot of time. I have every intention of doing this at some point, maybe a couple of years down the line, but will hold off for now. I would love it but the rest of the family would not....yet. ;)

I will never understand why people say to not use the credits for drinks. Delux Dining is so much food, but we always get it. Whatever snack credits we have at the end of the trip, we stock up on snacks we like for the drive home (gummis, cookies etc). I like using them for drinks too. Makes everything so simple.

Thank you for this! My husband and I are thinking about DDxP for our 10year anniversary. Our plan is to do early sit down breakfasts and signature dining at night. I could see how having a sit-down meal 3x a day would be a bit much.

It depends how long you want to stay at the park. The character meals are on a set schedule and actually don't take too long. And there are actually quite a number of selections for 2-point meals. I highly recommend Jiko, Brown Derby, Le Cellier, and the Spirit of Aloha dinner show at the Polynesian, all of which we really loved. Akershus was nice but not as nice as the other 2-point places we had. And I actually do recommend a room-service on an off-day. We had breakfast delivered to us on the morning we were packing for checkout, and it did save us quite a bit of time. For a five-day stay or less, I actually do recommend it. Any longer period, and it might be too much.

I do sincerely wish there was some in-between plan between plus-dining and deluxe dining which gave you two points per day and two snacks...now THAT would be near-ideal for what I'd want.

Is Akershus a 2credit meal at lunch or dinner? I've only gone there for breakfast and it is 1 credit then. Your in-between plan sounds good to me too!

Thanks OP for the review. I am beginning to think DxDDP would be a good plan if we want a breakfast TS plus a signature restaurant or 2 credit show for dinner each day. . . . We'll have to see what is on everyone's wish list for our next trip!

It's only 1 credit for all meals.

We really like the deluxe plan too. We eat breakfast or lunch and then dinner at a signature. We do like to use snack credits for drinks throughout the day. Le Fou's Brew and the iced tea at Joy of Tea in China are my favourites.

IIRC the only character meal that is 2 credits is CRT. Oh - and Mickey's Backyard BBQ.

We have done deluxe a few times. We always do a sit down breakfast and a signature meal late. It works well but it is a lot of food. Our children are bigger and they like this plan. However, this trip we are staying concierge level during food and wine and plan on getting the regular dining plan.

Just another tip from my own experience - space your meals much farther apart than you might think is necessary. For instance, I did lunch around 11:30 and had dinner scheduled around 6:30. By the time dinner rolled around, we were not hungry and ended up canceling a few dinners because of this (this was before the $10 cancellation penalty). When scheduling, these times sounded reasonable but due to the amount of food (plus the heat), we just were not hungry a lot. We didn't end up being hungry until closer to 9pm.
