We are planning a trip for this fall. My father-in-law has Parkinson's disease and has trouble walking. He is planning on renting a scooter for the week.
Just from seeing others use them on our prior trips, I know it can be challenging navigating the crowds.
Any tips for using one in the parks?

Go to the DisAbilities forum. There is a FAQ sticky for those needing wheelchairs or ecvs at WDW. The nice folks over there would be happy to answer any questions you have once you've read the info there.

We went with my mom two years ago and she/we had so much trouble that we're going to try a wheelchair this time around. I never knew there was a thread about it, so I'm definitely going to read it through.

The biggest problem (apart from the other people--but isn't that always the case?) is no brakes. I get it that they don't want riders flying over the handlebars, but it sure makes it difficult!

I'm sure it has a lot to do with when you're going due to crowd fluctuations, but we went with my MIL last Nov and rented a scooter from Apple. Other than slowing the pace a little we really didn't have any problems getting around. We were also very happy with the price at Apple and the scooter itself was in great condition and held a surprisingly long battery charge. I'm sure the thread on the DisAbilities board will be very helpful.
